| Because a word doesn't need to be an example of it's definition. |

Think of a syllable as a drum beat, or a breath pulse. If you are able to identify when your mouth is changing from one breath pulse to another, you can count the syllables. We who teach little ones frequently demonstrate syllabification by clapping out the beats of a variety of words. Start with one syllable and clap it, and then increase the syllables one at a time: DOG - one clap WALK - one clap TRAIN - one clap PEN-CIL-two claps BOOK CASE - two claps EL-E-VA-TOR- four claps MON-O-SYL-LA-BIC - five claps

Because we, humans call it that. While aliens, call it monoshdichenzhudbakshdi. Is that clear enough? |

A syllable is every time your jaw goes down.
Saying the word 'monosyllabic' makes your jaw go down 5 times.
Therefore, 5 syllables.
