I just finished watching this program, it was about the War of the Pacific(WWII) on an operation called "Flintlock" when the US was almost ready to start attacking Tokyo in Japan. There was this general who wanted a squadron of pilots to go to an island that the US had already captured south of Tokyo. The pilots(or squadron) needed an escort plane to reach there destination. The general made a terrible decision not to give an escort plane, so they went alone. While they were reaching a stop on a nearby island to their destination(To fuel up again) a storm unexpectedly came. The captain of the squadron had two decisions, either go under the storm, or out of it by going in it. He chose to go in it, but they all almost kept ramming into each other because it was so dark, some got lost never to be seen again. Some even left the formation knowing they were leaving. Most(I think) stayed in the formation, but suddenly their captain was starting to leave. One of the men tried to signal to him by hand(Which was risky because he had to get close to do it) that he was drifting off. But the captain left, and the pilot went back to the formation. One of the ones who had accidentally drifted away(or got lost) was low on fuel. Then he saw a nearby island and decided(He had to) to crash land on it. He landed, but in the water. He was in the shallow parts of the island, with blood on his face. To his suprise, friendly natives came and helped him, they took him to their camp, treated his wounds, gave him clean water, and food to eat. Meanwhile, one of the men in the existing squadron had crashed in the ocean, with the 40/50 foot waves. All he had was his life vest. One of the pilots still in flight was circling around the downed pilot. He was trying to make a decision, either keep going, or try and help his buddy. But suddenly he got low on fuel, he realized he had to jump out with all his survival gear. He jumped out, inflated his raft, and got in it with his food, water, and life jacket. The whole squadron also started to jump out of their planes with their own food water and rafts. they all came together and formed a raft chain. Only one of the men didn't make it to the chain, he was alone. While they were surviving out in the Pacific Ocean, the one who crash landed on the island had some weird problems. The chief of the friendly natives liked the American. He wanted him to marry one of his tribes women. He did not want this to happen, so he acted ill and begged the chief to post pone the marriage, he found a radio person on the island and contacted allied forces to rescue him, avoiding the marriage. The man out at sea alone survived for 15+/20+ days while the group of downed pilots survived 20+ days. How the lone pilot got saved was from a rescue plane(The rescue planes had two engines) and his signal flare. he thought the plane missed him when it started turning around and landed. He was safe. The group got rescued from a rescue plane also, but when the rescue plane saw them, another storm was forming with the same kind of waves. The pilot of that plane was afraid that if he came back for them, he wouldn't find them. So he landed in the water letting the men get on, but he mistakenly started pulling away, but again came back, and the downed pilots were saved. Only one problem, the rescue plane couldn't tale off because it's right engine had broke off the plane. The plane couldn't float for long on the water, but again they were rescued by a US carrier, and were given a meal they needed for three whole days. It wasn't the end of the war though, and they got back on time for operation "Flintlock". This is a true story, not made up. Remember them this memorial day.
