If you make a sphere with a 256 stud diameter, you'll notice it casts a shadow, but it's also surrounded by a darker circle at the ground. It surrounds the entire sphere at the ground, but it's lighter where it doesn't overlap with its shadow.

Also, computing the shadows for large scenes looks like a multi-pass affair.
