The Master Sword, the Triforce, Ganondorf’s rise to power, the presence of the Sages, the rise of the Hero of Time and the mysterious timeline split are all widely discussed and debated topics in the Zelda universe, and Ocarina of Time is mostly responsible for those discussions. Furthermore, the proposed timeline from the Hyrule Historia book suggests that there is in fact a third line of history spanning from Ocarina of Time, as opposed to the assumed two lines coming from the child and adult endings. The lore of Ocarina of Time is delicate as it has connections to many other titles in the Legend of Zelda series, and so it is imperative that we have a clear understanding of the history it presents, as well as all the game’s story and themes, in order to have a strong grasp on the lore of Hyrule throughout the series in its entirety.
The origins of the earth and the Triforce, creations of the three goddesses, are intimately discussed in Ocarina of Time by the Deku Tree and Zelda. The goddess Din moulded the earth, Farore created the life to inhabit the earth, and Nayru created law for the creatures to uphold. Then, as they departed for the heavens, they left behind the mythical Triforce, an object which grants the wishes of its holder, if they have a balanced heart. The Triforce was left at the point where the goddesses left the earth, which came to be known as the Sacred Realm. In order to shield the Triforce from those who would abuse its power, the ancient sages of Hyrule built the Temple of Time to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm. There the Triforce rested safely until the events of Ocarina of Time began, when Ganondorf entered the Sacred Realm and claimed the Triforce for himself.

Immediately, the game confirms that only one with a balanced heart may wish on the Triforce, as Ganondorf is unable to wield its full power. While he does gain the strength to take over Hyrule, the Triforce did not grant him its full force, and it split into three pieces; power, wisdom and courage. Ganondorf received the Triforce of Power, while Link and Zelda received Courage and Wisdom respectively, as decided by destiny. It follows that Ganondorf attempts to capture Link and Zelda and reclaim their Triforce pieces in order to form the full Triforce once more and have his wishes granted.
While never stated in-game, Ganondorf’s quest to form the Triforce once more implies that combining the three split pieces allows the holder to have their wish granted, whether or not they have a balanced heart. This scenario is directly demonstrated in the Wind Waker, where Ganondorf forms the Triforce, and King Daphnes makes his wish on it.
At the beginning of Ocarina of Time, the Triforce is resting in the Sacred Realm, guarded by the Temple of Time. At the conclusion of Skyward Sword, the game preceding Ocarina of Time, the Triforce lies atop the statue of the goddess, so it follows that between the two games, the Triforce must be secured in the Sacred Realm, and the Temple of Time constructed by the Sages. As the Master Sword is laid to rest in the pedestal inside the Sealed Temple at the conclusion of Skyward Sword, it is extremely likely that this is the very same location that one day becomes the Temple of Time seen in Ocarina of Time. The Sealed Temple is also home to the last Gate of Time, strengthening the connection between the locations of the Sealed Temple of the Temple of Time. During her tale of the Triforce in Ocarina of Time, Zelda tells Link that the Sages built the Temple of Time to protect the Triforce, but whether this takes place before or after SS, or it is even still considered fact, is inconclusive.
The Sages themselves have been mentioned in the Zelda series on numerous occasions, but Ocarina of Time shows them in full detail as they aid Link during his quest and eventually Seal away Ganondorf. During the adult portion of the game, after meeting Rauru, Link awakened the beings in Hyrule who were destined to play the role of the six Sages; Saria, Ruto, Darunia, Impa and Nabooru. Along with Zelda, they fulfilled their destiny during that time period. However, during the child portion of the game, they were not awakened. Twilight Princess, which we know takes place after the child ending of Ocarina of Time, depicts 6 faceless Sages putting Ganondorf on trial. These Sages are likely only a spiritual manifestation of the true Sages, as they appear as identical ethereal beings, with their only differences being the symbols they bare, the symbols of their respective medallions. Nonetheless, there is a clear distinction between the two sets of Sages seen in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.
As I see you standing there holding the mythical Master Sword, you really do look like the legendary Hero of Time… - Sheik, Ocarina of Time

The Master Sword is first encountered in the Temple of Time, resting in its pedestal behind the Door of Time. Link draws the sword, but by doing so, unknowingly opens the Sacred Realm, allowing Ganondorf to claim the Triforce. Link was then sealed within the Sacred Realm for seven years so that he would be old enough to wield the Master Sword and become the Hero of Time. Not much is said about the Master Sword’s history during Ocarina of Time, only that it is the blade of evil’s bane and that it was wielded by the original Hero of Time. We know that the Link from Skyward Sword first forged and held the Master Sword, and as he too travelled through time during his quest, we can conclude that he was the original Hero of Time spoken of during Ocarina of Time.
As the story of Ocarina of Time comes to a close, we are presented with two obvious conclusions; the adult ending, where Link disappears as he returns to the past, leaving Hyrule in peace after defeating Ganon, and the child ending, where Link returned after his long journey and warns Zelda of the future ahead. The consequences of this timeline split are that there are now two different histories spanning from the tale of Ocarina of Time; two lines for future legends to take place. On one side, the adult ending, the Hero of Time is no longer present, and eventually, Ganondorf breaks free of his seal.
In order to stop Ganondorf from acquiring power, the Gods called down the great flood on Hyrule, burying the land beneath a great sea. Many years later, the Hero of Winds appears and we have The Wind Waker take place. On the other side of the split timeline, we see Link return to the past, baring the mark of the Triforce of Courage. He informs Zelda that Ganondorf is indeed trying to take the Triforce, and Ganondorf is arrested and put on trial. The nameless Sages were to execute Ganondorf, but using the Triforce of Power, he resisted them, and so the Sages had no choice but to banish Ganondorf into the Twilight Realm through the Mirror of Twilight, and so Twilight Princess begins. While these two histories have been well established in the Zelda community, the timeline featured in the Hyrule Historia book insists that there in fact a third line of history spanning from Ocarina of Time.
“After Link dies in Ocarina of Time, Ganon obtains the entire Triforce. The Seven Sages seal away Ganon and the whole Triforce as a last resort, but villains with their eyes on the Triforce make for the Sacred Realm, which eventually turns into the Dark World and is filled with evil power. The Seven Sages then try to seal away the Sacred Realm itself, but end up fighting with monsters. This is the Imprisoning War of A Link to the Past.” - Translation of quote from Hyrule Historia

The book tells us that an alternate ending to the Adult timeline takes place, where Link fails to defeat Ganondorf in the final battle of Ocarina of Time. In order to stop Ganondorf from taking over the entire world after his victory over Link, the Sages seal both Ganondorf and the entire Triforce in the Sacred Realm, and eventually the tale of A Link to the Past follows on this line. Overall, Nintendo maintains Ocarina of Time not only as a prequel to A Link to the Past, as it was originally intended, but also a prequel to two other lines of history that branch into Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker.
Indeed the tale of Ocarina of Time is well known by most Zelda fans, as it provides the foundation for many of the other legends that take place in the world of the Legend of Zelda. As with Skyward Sword, many critical points of interest are investigated in Ocarina of Time; the Triforce, the Master Sword, the Sages and the Hero of Time. Being the first true story of the battle between Link and Ganondorf, Ocarina of Time is the stem of the histories that tell of their future conflicts in Twilight Princess, The Wind Waker and A Link to the Past. While the split timeline has been prominently known for quite some time now, the third branch from Ocarina of Time suggested in the Hyrule Historia book offers a new and unexpected explanation for the chronological placement of A Link to the Past, a title that has long been a topic of debate.
While the timeline presented in the Hyrule Historia book offers an explanation for the chronology of the series, it is still our job as fans and theorists to explore and question the lore of the Legend of Zelda series, in order to grasp the full nature of the connections within the series. There will be more games in the future to master and understand, and the tales we have already enjoyed are still ripe with mystery.
