After months (and I do mean months) of debating the possible addition of sniper rifles for Apocalypse Rising, ZolarKeth and I have decided against it. There will be no sniper rifles.
I'm going to explain exactly why, and after my explanation I will offer you our alternative.
From a technical standpoint, there are a lot of different ways to make snipers work. The most effective, and most simply way of making snipers "zoom" is done by increasing the Field of View of the player's camera. The result is a larger image of what's in front of you, and a more sensitive mouse. Deadzone's snipers use this method, for an example.
[MOUSE SENSITIVITY]
The problem with this FOV method, is that the mouse sensitivity increases to the point where precise movements are impossible. Roblox's mouse is not smooth whatsoever. Moving your Roblox mouse across your screen may seem smooth, but when you use FOV to zoom in, you realize how choppy and incremental the mouse movement is.
Sniping in any Roblox game consists of hovering over your target with your cursor, and then moving with WASD to precisely line up the shot. (Because character movement is smoother than the mouse) There's nothing we can do about this, but we definitely don't like it.
[BALANCING]
Most guns kill people in two or three shots in the real world. But this is a game that's designed to be fun for everyone. We have scaled the most damaging weapons in Apoc to kill a player in five shots at the least. Because you should have a chance to fight back if you are surprised.
What makes snipers so appealing is that they typically kill people in one shot, from a long distance. Well, that's great and all, but Apoc guns do less damage than that. If we did add snipers, they would not be one-hit-kills. Rather, they would be 3-4 hit kills. Otherwise, it would be completely unrealistic for snipers to do more damage than any other gun.
Even if snipers did do more damage, you'll have those jerks who just use the sniper like a shotgun - running into a building and hip-firing like a madman. (Deadzone) "Make it so snipers only do more damage when you zoom in," you say? Apart from that being completely ridiculous, that would work fine. Except that snipers would become medium-range assault rifles with a feature like that.
If we did have snipers, we would ensure that players wouldn't use them like shotguns, and we would ensure that they were realistic in damage and appearance. At one point, everything was balanced perfectly, but then we found that having a gun that is balanced to be good for long-range ONLY, is terrible when the mouse is so bad that you can't aim precisely at anything. Snipers would not be loved, because of the fact that they would not be overpowered.
[VISUAL APPEARANCE]
The best way to make sniper scopes, is by having a mesh that you can physically see though by aiming down the sight. (A feature in both Apoc and Deadzone) Unfortunately, there are only a few meshes that enable you to do this without using a lot of bricks, and the meshes look terrible.
Yes, I am complaining about how it looks. Apoc guns consist of 20-40 bricks, and any scope we throw on a sniper would look horrible compared to the rest of the gun. It looks fine in Deadzone, because those snipers are made of 5-10 bricks anyway. We don't want this in Apoc, we have standards.
[THE ALTERNATIVE]
We want to add a few new attachments to the game. The ACOG sight, and others, that are supposed to have a higher zoom power than the sights we have in the game right now.
When we add in these attachments, we will give them the same FOV zoom that snipers would have had. (FOV zoom is very limited, and doesn't actually zoom in that much when you maximize it) The current sights in Apoc are almost at max zoom, so the ACOG sight will be slightly more zoomed in.
What we want to do is give players the same zoom of snipers with these sights, but then choose what they want to use them for. Sure, you won't get an M95 .50 caliber sniper, but instead you can use that strong zoom on something designed for medium range. By using these sights at medium range, you wouldn't encounter the mouse issue mentioned above, and you would actually be able to center on your target. Even better, you can move the sights onto guns of different accuracies. If you slap an ACOG on the M14, you will essentially have a sniper rifle.
But that's not all.
We're adding about 16 new guns to Apocalypse Rising. The list will feature nothing but shiny new military rifles, and sidearms. Even better, over 80% of these guns will use magazine types that are already in the game.
With these new weapons you will be able to take your ACOG sight and make plenty of "sniper rifle" type weapons.
I apologize for crushing your dreams of sniper rifles. But Roblox needs to give us more meshes, a better way to zoom, and smoother mouse movements before snipers will actually be good.

I respect your decision, Gus, and the M14+ACOG combo is definitely what I will use. I am pretty gutted that we can't have proper sniper rifles in game, as I'd love myself an SVD or M82, but I can live without it. If I find a CCO and an M14, I am practically sniping anyway. If you can't give us sniper rifles, just one thing, please... SILENCED REVOLVERS. Thanks for caring, Gus!

| "We have standards" Gusmanak and Zolar are proffessinials so... you are just like Sniper from TF2 xD Also, thanks for no snipers. Can't imagine the noobs trying to no scope and being so paranoid about losing their snipers it would just be terrible. |

| I never really was pumped up about having snipers or not, because there where already guns like the Lee Enfield and Mosin-Nagant that are snipers, just without scopes. |

| well dude. you forgot that you cant equip any scopes on guns from the early 1900s. still, i agree with you. im also pumped about the new guns coming out. im starting to get sick of the guns already in-game. |
