Landsman: The raw recruits, with no experience of the sea. This rank is acquired automatically upon entrance to the group.
Seaman: Trained to aid in the handling of a ship's sails and guns. This rank is given upon purchase of the Seaman uniform.
Gunner: Specializing in the aiming and working of a ship's battery of guns, these men are artisans of their trade. This rank is given to Seamen who show promise at naval gunnery.
Quartermaster: Experts at maneuvering in battle, the Quartermaster is a supreme navigator and helmsman. This rank is given to seamen who show promise at navigation and ship handling.
Boatswain: The Bos'Un is the sergeant aboard ships, trained to keep order and discipline among the lower orders.
Midshipman: The senior warrant officer, in training to become commissioned as a Lieutenant. This rank is given to Bos'Uns who show command potential, and to prominent members of allied groups as a sign of patronage.
Acting Lieutenant: Senior enough to lead, but not having passed the lieutenant's examination, the Acting Lieutenant is a Midshipman who has spent a week or more at his post.
Lieutenant: Commanding the gun batteries and overseeing the day-to-day tasks aboard a ship, the Lieutenant is the first fully commissioned officer rank, and one of the most senior posts aboard a ship. Lieutenant's are only commissioned after passing an examination given by three Post Captains.
Master and Commander: Lieutenants who do well have a chance of becoming a Commander, and captaining a ship of their own. Commanders generally hold post in the smaller ships, such as sloops and Corvettes. Commanders are made of senior Lieutenants, who have spent at least one month as a commissioned officer, as well as having at least 20 screenshot ship victories.
Post Captain: The elites of the navy, commanding the daring frigates and slap-sided Ships of the Line, the wooden monsters that ruled the waves. Only the most elite of the Commanders is made Post, and the basic requirement is at least 30 screenshot ship victories.
Commodore: Post Captains who are able enough to lead small flotillas, but not yet senior enough to be promoted to Rear Admiral.
Rear Admiral: Rear Admirals lead small squadrons of ships, and sometimes command ports. Promotion to Rear Admiral is by vacancy, and eligible Captains must have spent five months at that rank.
Vice Admiral: Commanding small fleets and squadrons, and often ports, Vice Admirals have spent at least one month as a Rear Admiral, and have taken part in at least one major linebattle.
Admiral: Commanding large fleets, and entire ocean stations, Admirals have spent one month as Vice Admiral, and partaken in at least 3 major linebattles. |
