Because YOU are killing the games industry. Used game sales are the biggest issue in the games industry, even larger than piracy.
When you buy a used game, not a single penny goes back to the developers and publishers. This forces many developers and publishers out of business. At least with game passes, the devs/publishers get a small amount of money, and you still get it slightly cheaper most of the time.
So, stop whining unless you want to see more great studios shut down.

But for a game to be used, it has to have been purchased new by someone. Of course, this would mean this prevents other new sales from taking place. But, since the game is property of the buyer, they can do pretty much whatever they want to it. Same deal with someone who decides to buy a used car or a couch from a neighbor.
Don't even get me started on public libraries!

There's a difference between a game, a car, and a book.
A book costs a small amount of money to first create, then it's mass-published for low prices. It's easy to make a profit. Borrowing a book from a library means you have to return it some time.
A car is designed for a small bit of money, but most of the costs are in actually producing the car. Buying a used car usually is at sub-par quality. Same thing with furniture.
Games cost money to first create. A lot of money, actually. The average AAA game price has been increasing constantly, and you see games like Star Wars: The Old Republic costing $300,000,000 to make. There is absolutely no disadvantage to used games, and there's no reason not to buy them. So, people who would have otherwise bought the game new (and give money to the starving developers) instead bought it used for $10 cheaper, because there's no disadvantage to it.

You're acting as if all used game sales are bad. Say if I were to go to a gaming store, and I want an old PS2 game, and there is no way to give the money to the developers for the game, and I can't be bothered to run a PS2 emulator, I'll just buy it there.
If this sort of stuff happens in the same year of the game coming out, I can see your point, but you got to think for a second that most people who buy used games don't even think about helping the developer. |

| 60€ price tag on your average console game totally isnt the reason people look for cheaper alternatives. |

@therealcommander
Games cost many millions of dollars to make. They won't make it back if the game costed $20, because remember that part of the price goes to making the CD itself, part of the profit goes to the retailer, part of the price goes to other distributors, and even then the measly amount that's left is split up between the devs and publishers.

How are used games worse then pirated games?
Pirated games: The game devs get no money from it at any point in time. Used Games: The game devs get money from the first person who bought it. |

| a pirate is still a potential customer whereas a person who buys a used game would not have the incentive to buy a new copy because the used copy is just as good, assuming the disc is not damaged. |

| I haven't seen a big company which went out of business because of piracy. Same with used games. |

@over
And people have more important things to use money on than games, if a gaming business cannot survive in this economic situation it will die, simple as that |

@CatFaces
Company makes a high budget game
It doesn't sell well when it comes out
But it get's pirated a lot and it's used game sales are quite high
Then they go bankrupt.
This happens a lot, a recent example being THQ with Darksiders 2. |

| Piracy doesnt mean a loss to the company as its uncertain whether the pirate would've ever bought the product if pirating wasnt possible, same with used game sales, the actual loss of profits is very uncertain |

The discs are generally scratched to high hell, though.

| There hasn't been much research put into seeing if removing used games would harm profits, considering people generally buy them because they can't afford the full priced game or the retailer shoves it in their face. |
