there is a tl;dr version at the end
okay, so my school has been trying to change lots of things. all of my classmates agree that these changes are not needed and won't change anything. next year, they are lengthening the school day by 15 minutes. what will 15 extra (unneeded) minutes do for the school? sure, each class will be 3 or 4 minutes longer, but there will probably be no effect. also, they are changing the schedule. this year is the last year of home ec, and they are replacing it with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). we already have science and math classes anyway, so half of that class will be worthless. also, i heard that classes will be lengthened to 90 minutes. this doubles the length of all classes except for LA, which is already 90 minutes. if we can get through the curriculum with 45 minute classes, what will double the time do? since you can't fit at least 5 90-minute classes in a school day (even with the extra 15 minutes) there will be a rotating schedule! i'm sure everyone wants to have only 2-3 classes a day, right?
the school day is fine as it is, so why change it?
tl;dr: my school is making changes that won't make an impact, so i came here to rant about it. |

+15 minute school days
+45 minute classes.
Well, that doesn't add up. Maybe you DO need more math in your life. |

@joebobnx
the rotating schedule. for example, you might have math and science on one day and la and social studies on another (there will be more classes though) |

"if we can get through the curriculum with 45 minute classes, what will double the time do?"
That's called block scheduling, and if you knew anything about it, or even stopped to think for one moment, you'd realize that:
1. Getting through the curriculum isn't the only important thing in school. 2. Block scheduling increases time spent in classes and decreases time spent in transitions, as well as offering all the other benefits that it does, such as a more accommodating schedule for homework. 3. The time spent in each class isn't doubled -- it's barely increased at all. Each class is only had every other day. |

| That sounds pretty idiotic. It would increase time in classrooms, but it would be harder to keep up as you go a day or few between classes. |

In my district in Washington State, we are having some changes next year.
Our currently schedule is start times at 7:40 and end times at 2:10 with 3 classes per day for 90 minutes each. On Wednesdays we have a 9:25 start time and a 2:25 end time.
Next year, we are getting rid of the Wednesday schedule and making 1-hour late Mondays to increase class time. We are also changing the start and end times. Doesn't sound like it will be fun to me.

@supercrazyhuman
also, taking in so much knowledge in such little time probably isn't too good. you would probably only remember half of the things because you would zone out halfway through class |

"but still, why are they changing things? it's fine the way it is."
Because it will likely be better after the changes. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" doesn't apply here, because the whole U.S. school system is profoundly broken, so really, any steps to improve it are welcome in my eyes.
"It would increase time in classrooms, but it would be harder to keep up as you go a day or few between classes."
Why would that make it harder to keep up? You just made it sound like giving students the weekend off is the worst idea ever. |

This already happens, and it doesn't matter how the day is split up, as long as it's the same length people will zone out anyways. |

>also, taking in so much knowledge in such little time probably isn't too good. you would probably only remember half of the things because you would zone out halfway through class Exactly, I can hardly pay attention in my 35 minute classes. I would be asleep not even 15 minutes into the day. |

@stuntddude
well, with the schedule my district follows now, we have 5 academic classes (foreign language, science, math, la, social studies) along with 2 other classes (music, art, etc.) five classes in one day seems better than five classes every two days (to me, at least) |

Why does ten class periods spread out over two days seem better to you than five spread out over two days? |

Anything to actually give the teachers time to explain it. I'm homeschooled but since it's an online program and technically a public school I have online class sessions with people I'll never have to meet in real life after I leave school. The essential ones are for math and reading, but last year I had teachers for everything. In 5th grade my classes were 90 minutes and THAT wasn't enough to get it done because apparently 5th grade females don't like shutting up. Also the guys liked to make dirty jokes while it was being explained so yeah I was pretty much the only one who gave my whole attention to the teacher.
