They are games that are now rising in popularity. They're affordable, they require no long-term commitment, and their simplicity of design only helps to engage the player further as there is no need to learn complex game mechanics.
While considering your opinion, keep in mind that Pac-Man and Tetris fall under the category of "casual".

They're an annoyance in the fact game developers are converting their series to be part of the casual audience, but they end up ruining the series in the process. I have no problem with casual games in themselves, but rather what the developers do out of greed.

Don't assume I'm insulting the intensity of Pac-Man.
You do have a point though. Pac-Man is intense, but more so in later levels. The game challenges you to play until you lose, and if you lose early often, you'll never get anything more intense out of it. However, if you're a Pac-Man wizard, then you'll experience the full and intense rush of playing the game. Games that can be casual sometimes can still be hardcore if you play it as such. |

| Perhaps you're right, lunar. There probably is a way of aggregating all games made in a certain era, so that may be valid, but it's still true that if the games were made in this era, they'd fall into the casual category. |

"casual titles are cancer like bejeweled and farmville
and casual gaming needs to die" If casual games go, the entire market goes. Popcap and Zynga are developers for the casual audience and the casual audience only. |

| Casual, I personally believe, does not mean easy. It means simple, and I think that anything, simple or not, can be made to be more difficult. Casual games are just likely to have a difficulty curve that isn't very steep. |
