Greetings, Liege Ryan! You and your group of soldiers have been assigned to the city of Tarock, which is located near land known to be orc territory. The orcs and their goblin friends are laying siege to the town, and have a camp outside.
Your forces -
Sixty footmen, armed with swords, axes, and maces. Fourty archers, armed with crossbows and shortbows. Ten knights on horseback.
Known enemy forces -
One hundred assorted melee troops. Twenty wolf riders. Two siege towers.
Tarock is a large town, consisting of thirty houses, multiple inns and shops, and a central keep. It is surrounded on three sides by cliffs, and overlooks a valley filled with pines, oaks, and birches. |

| Alright. Send off all the axemen to cut down some trees, and send all horses to bring the trees to the edge of the cliff. Have the archers dig a little gully in the cliff edge, to hold the tree trunks steady, and have one archer look at the camp below. |

The axemen, unused to using the battle and war axes to cut down trees, do so. The knights attach ropes to their saddles and have their horses drag the trees back as the archers finish their cliff.
The archer looks at the camp, and notices that the orcs are assembling what looks like a ballista.
A runner is sent back to the nearest city, Fenslock, requesting footmen and knights. |

| Take everyone but the archers and dig another trench [about two feet deep] facing the town [so basically trench-trees-cliff], and the archers fire flaming arrows down on the ballista, trying to slow construction, and have twenty five do that. Have the other fire aim for the ones building it. |

The archers begin to bombard the orcs. The fire arrows hit the ballista and the ground near it. The orcs put out the fire, but not before a large portion of the ballista is destroyed. Several orcs are killed by flaming arrows.
The trench construction goes well. |

| Okay, now with the trench done, have some people cut through the logs, about a foot wide, so some people can squeeze through without climbing over it. Keep the log, and get some nails and hammers. Have the archers continue shooting at anyone near the ballista, without flaming arrows. Send four knights off to buy blackpowder [enough to make ten bombs], if there are any dwarfs. Are there guardtowers/walls facing the cliff? Also, is there any militia or town guard I can recruit from the town? |

There is a town militia, consisting of twenty members. They've got fifteen swordsmen, and five archers. The town is surrounded by wooden walls, and three stone watchtowers.
You finish the log barricades, and the archers continue to shoot at anyone who approaches the ballista. Eventually, a brave goblin runs up and sets it on fire, most likely under orders from the orc commander. He's shot before he can get back to the camp.
The four knights set off, and as night is falling, one returns. He reports that they found a travelling dwarf merchant near another town, selling dwarvish toys for the children, and that the knights who remained were working on buying gunpowder from him.
He also reports that the reinforcements, called for previously, were on their way and would be there by the next morning. |

Okay, okay, and okay.
Drill footmen in sword training, and go over the strategy of this.
The first part of the plan is that about ten would stay outside, kneeling in the grass, shoving off ladders and lobbing heads off as needed. When things start to get too hot to handle, they are supposed to retreat back into the log trench using the two routes provided [log parts cut]. All are supposed to kneel, and when orcs start coming over, they are to stick swords in them.
Drill archers in archery, practicing targets. Go over this strategy with them.
Set them all up on watch towers and the wall facing the cliff, and have them shoot at the enemy, and take out the siege towers with flaming arrows. If things go bad, they are supposed to lob blackpowder bombs into the trenches yelling "Fall back!" and once most have fallen back, they are to lob the blackpowder bombs into the crowd, trying to wreck the defenses [that way they can't hide behind them; log defenses, if we start taking the cliff back], and after that continuing shooting, but retreat to the side walls.
Confer with knights about both strategies, see if they think anything of it, and what.
Have all knights just basically stand outside the gates, and after the blackpowder bombs, they are to charge into the enemy, leading the remaining footsoldiers into the attack, attempting to drive them back. |

| The infantry begin training, and after conferring with the knights, they agree with the plans. The three knights return with the gunpowder for the bombs, and a blacksmith in town offers to help make casing for them. |

| Have the blacksmith case them, and also pay him money to refine swords and axes. Give completed bombs to archers. |

| The blacksmith begins designing and making bomb casings, having never constructed something so odd before. His two apprentices work on refining the weapons. |

Everyone gets some rest, except for the archers on guard.
[Timeskip!]
The sun is barely rising as the reinforcements arrive. The knights bow to you, and ask where they're needed. The footmen disperse among the other footmen, who you already had. |

| Have the knights redrill all troops in previous tactics. The new knights I send back to the gate, with me. Send a footsoldier to the cliff and see how close the orcs are. |

The footsoldier reports that the orcs are constructing more ballistas, but behind the camp. He tried firing off an arrow, but found out that they're out of reach.
The new knights follow you to the gate as the old knights continue drilling the troops. |

| We're pretty much screwed if they manage to construct a ballista. Can I send two archers on a suicide mission to destroy them, if there's any feasible way of getting down the cliff? |

| The cliff is slanted enough, and has enough ledges, to descend safely. |

| Send three archers, and tell them to burn as many ballistas and take out as many orcs as possible. Try and return, but don't return until the ballista production is shut down! Send them off. |
