There are other threats than just North Korea and its missiles, and I wrote this to illustrate that. Our current foreign policy is horrendous.
Now, let's analyze all of the current possible (but feasible) threats to the U.S., some of them less significant than others. Feel free to negate them. Also, I'm no expert, I'm just going off of some of the knowledge that I know. Also, I'd personally appreciate if you didn't say "tl;dr", and rather just restrain yourself from posting.
SECTION 1 - SYRIA
1. Currently, Syria has the fourth largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. As you probably know, Syria is in chaos right now and is not under control with an undergoing civil war. Uncontrolled borders means that these chemical weapons, as well as the weapons the U.S. supplies the rebels, may go to areas unintended. Ultimately, the weapons could fall into the hands of groups like the AQAP - who may likely try to use them against Americans. The AQAP have shown that they don't care about their own casualties as long as American suffering is involved - so if these chem. weps get in the hands of the al-Qaeda, it will be detrimental.
2. We are supplying Syrian rebels with weapons. We should've learned from Iraq and Afghanistan, in which we tried to nation build but there wasn't strong national ground under our feet, that these weapons could be later used against us.
This becomes even more likely because not all the Syrian rebels are the people we want to give weapons to, and it makes no sense to continue doing so. The UN have condemned them of torture, murder, etc., there are Islamic fighters bent on eradicating minorities, etc. So while it may seem like we're mitigating violations against humanity by supplying rebels, we're actually fueling potential human rights violation conflict. However, the Syrian rebels are justified in trying to overthrow Assad, the U.S. just shouldn't be supplying arms. We see that getting involved with Syria is a losing strategy all around.
SECTION 2 - THE CYBER THREAT
This is something that doesn't get talked about enough. Obama has said that the instance of a cyber threat is one of the most formidable dangers to our national security and economy (paraphrased, you can look it up) - and our Defense Secretary has said that it could result in a "cyber-Pearl Harbor". The CSIS indicated that we have no real retaliation against a cyber attack, and that we're basically defenseless. This is one reason why we need to establish an actual Department of Cybersecurity, but that's irrelevant. The following countries pose a threat to the U.S. through cyberspace.
a. Iran We launched a failed virus called the Stuxnet on Iranian nuclear infrastructure. This resulted in resentment in Iran, and resulted in the Qaasam (not sure if that's spelt right) Cyber Fighters launching a 5-week invasion on U.S. banks. Likely, millions were stolen, and then it was covered up by the government and the banks were basically told not to disclose any info about the attacks. This invasion was literally announced weeks before it happened, and yet, our cyber security wasn't able to mitigate the foreseen problem. This just shows that not only is our current cyber defense program full of idiots, but it also makes it evident that our cybersecurity isn't up to par. It also shows that a cyber threat poses a grave danger on America.
b. North Korea North Korea is currently training cyber warriors, and pouring their funds into developing their cyber security. We have nuclear watchdogs, the predicament of mutual destruction making a missile attack less likely, missile defense program, etc. that make North Korea less of a threat as far as atomic weapons go. However, cybersecurity is another major threat that they pose. America is most vulnerable to a cyber threat because we rely on computers and computer-based technology more than anyone else.
c. Al-Qaeda, Taliban, etc. Cyber hackers can hack into the grid lines in subways and cause many humans that are utilizing transportation to crash and be killed. This is an act of terrorism, and currently, the AQAP is developing cybersecurity and viruses that can be used against opposition. And once again, the AQAP has no allies, doesn't care about mutual destruction, etc. - so they're a lot more likely to actually commence a threat against the U.S.
Also, despite China relying on America for free trade and the U.S. still owing $200 billion+ to China, China has hacked into emails between politicians, stole Google's source code, have attacked various U.S. companies, etc. and are developing their cyber technology. However, I don't really consider this a threat to U.S. national security, because China has agreed to try to crack down on the cyber hackers in their government. Essentially, these cyber hackings are done by China and its government, but individuals that happen to reside in the Chinese gov. and with China agreeing to try to mitigate the problem, it'll be more able to remove the various hackers from their government.
SECTION 3 - DRONE STRIKING
This is something else that doesn't get talked about enough. We are currently drone striking in Yemen and Pakistan. As a result, hundreds of children have actually died. We use drones as part of our "lead-from-behind" policy to reduce terrorism. However, it has actually reciprocated results opposite of our intentions. A 2009 estimate said that there were only about 300 AQAP members. Today, there are over 1,000. This shows that not only has drone striking not worked, because it's not significantly reducing terrorism, but it has bred more terrorists. We often kill innocents through drone strikes, and a result, it is the relatives and family members who get mad at their family being killed by the U.S. and then decide to join the AQAP. It is for this logical reason that the AQAP has grown significantly, and drone striking will likely continue to breed hatred and resentment and result in more terrorist group members. Obviously, al-Qaeda poses a threat to us. Not only do they not care about their own casualties at the cost of American suffering, but al-Qaeda's planning of terrorism for the U.S. and developed countries is kind of the point of the organization.
SECTION 4 - IRANIAN NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION
Currently, our foreign policy is not working with Iran. First of all, we put sanctions Iran to prevent their nuclear program from continuing. We've had almost a decade of sanctions, and Iran still hasn't stopped their weapon proliferation. The conventional logic behind them was that they would see that it wasn't economically in their benefit to continue their nuclear program. However, they were willing to change balance of things and make it bad for the U.S. by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is still at a 20% -level- of enriching uranium, so obviously the sanctions aren't working.
I agree that Iran is not going to launch a nuke at the U.S. However, our current foreign policy states that if an ally goes to war, we are responsible for supplying aid. Iran have said in meetings that they want to "wipe Israel off the map". Israel helps us economically (somewhat) and politically, and if Iran does succeed in building a nuke and uses them against Israel, we would be drawn into the conflict. This would thereby harm our national security. Secondly, if Iran does get a nuclear weapon at all, it would be seen as a diplomatic defeat by the U.S. It's obvious that we've put a lot of dedication into trying to mitigate Iran's nuclear proliferation, and so if they do actually get a nuke, other countries that want nuclear weapons would push our world policies even harder. Allies and enemies both would question our ability to resolve conflict in the Middle East. (on a side note, the irrational leader of Iran did claim to have a nuclear weapon a couple weeks ago, but it was lies and was disproven)
