What was going through their mind when they decided they would NOT give support for ps3 games, considering the playstation series has been revered for backwards capability ?

Normally, I would not be so butthurt over this (yes, I'm butthurt, but I'm going to try and qq in a sensible way), but how could I not be when I have amassed such a huge collection of ps1-ps3 games ? The obvious solution would be to keep the ps3, but what about when they stop supporting psn for the ps3, which they will ? What will happen to the game collection I have on there ? Another reason I am always hesitant about just having a digital download is it's always a flighty world. I mean, one day, you could have it, the next day POOF, it's gone.

They are not doing this just to make more money, not that there is anything wrong with wanting to make more money at all, but they because of time and money constraints : they want to push the console out to the market fast, but present it a cheaper price, and one of the ways to cut prices is to cut off support for ps3 games, and I'm assuming ps1 as well (ps2 support is already cut off).

The thing is, if it cost 150 $ or so extra molla to add backwards support capability to the ps4, I would be more than willing to pay for that. In the end, it's cheaper than having to re-purchase my games that I bought on the psn.

When I do purchase the ps4, I'm going to have to hold onto my ps2 and ps3 if I want to play all the physical copies of games I own, thankfully, sony consoles seem to be made extremely well. My 12 y/o ps2 still works great, no frame rate drop or anything.

You may have also heard of the supposed cloud streaming feature they are adding to solve the dilemma : you can stream older ps games to your console. Want to know what the catch is ? You have to be connected to the internet at all times. That means if you have an internet outage, guess what ? No more gaming for you !

Another more important issue is that unless they are extremely fast, there is no way they can add even 25% of the total amount of playstation games.

Amount of Playstation games :

ps1 : 2,418
ps2 : 3,857
ps3 : 772

Looks like its bound that someone ain't gonna play their favorite games !

It is to make more money.

Everyone will trade there PS3 in, then there have to download the games on the PS4 for extra bucks.

op you clearly haven't done your research

sony are providing a service called "gaikai" which allows you to stream PS1, PS2 and PS3 games since the Cell processor is difficult/impossible to emulate

it's really not that bad, if you're so upset, just keep your PS3

They will most likely keep making PS3 games after PS4's release. Like what they did with PS2.

you would be willing to pay for that, but the average consumer wouldn't. People don't have enough money to buy these sort of things, maybe you do, but I and many others do not

The dramatic change in processor architecture makes emulation very resource intensive.

I understand that the ps4, in it's current state, cannot be backwards compatible.
I also mentioned the cloud streaming service, piratty. I know I wrote a very large post, but I did mention it.

The thing is, will the service even be free ? Doubt it, but more importantly, most games will probably not be on there. Only 10% or so, that's how large the Playstation library is.

Now what would be cool is if they made a dedicated system just for playing playstation games, no frills, no nothing. All it did was play games. It would be an alternative to the ps4.

Companies can never take the time anymore to make there system backwards compatible the greedy punks. None of the 8th generation consoles are gonna be backwards compatible which sucks.

@snow

Their not really greedy, they just don't want to take the time to make it backwards compatible.

Again, I have nothing against them making money, or wanting to make lots of it, but this isn't the way to do it.

@xeno

Most likely it isn't going to cover even 10 % of the total playstation catalog.
It will probably cost money to download psn games you ALREADY have, or had, for that matter.

Play PS1 games on a PS1 play PS2 games on a PS2, Sony isn't going to do something extremely hard because you're butt hurt and can't afford 90's systems.

Oh, and, reported for spam.

Why exactly is it not easy to play a game you already have on a console you already have?

"They will drop support for it"

You already have the consoles and you already have the games. Why would you need Sony to support it to play it? The PS1 and PS2 played games fine without a constant internet connection and the PS3 does the same thing now.
