So, let's start with the NES.

NES (generation 1)
SNES (generation 2)

But then, something happens.
PS1 comes along!

PS1 (generation 3???)

But then the N64 comes along, so...

N64 (generation... 4?)

This is where it stops making sense. The PS1 can't be part of the SNES's or the N64's generation, because it comes right in between them.

This is why the generation thing doesn't make any sense.
You can't group the systems together in same generations because they are completely different companies with completely different consoles that they release at completely different times.

It would make much more sense to put the consoles at their own individual generations. Such as:

NES (Nintendo's generation 1)
SNES (Nintendo's generation 2)
N64 (Nintendo's generation 3)
GC (Nintendo's generation 4)
Wii (Nintendo's generation 5)
Wii U (Nintendo's generation 6)

PS1 (Sony's generation 1)
PS2 (Sony's generation 2)
PS3 (Sony's generation 3)
PS4 (Sony's generation 4)

Xbox (Microsoft's generation 1)
360 (Microsoft's generation 2)
720 (Microsoft's generation 3)

See? Doesn't that make much more sense?

The generation thing we refer to tries to compare and fit together 3 completely different companies. And what if another comes into the mix? And what about older companies like Sega and Atari?

Doesn't make much sense.

They probably do it like the former because the consoles released close to one another.

@alt

I left out a lot of consoles.

This thread seemed mainly directed towards the PS/Nintendo consoles so I only listed them.

The console generations make complete sense, and no each company does not have it's own generation as it is much easier to use a single generation naming scheme.
