| The Roman Empire wasn't always an empire. Around 600 BC, it was a monarchy. Kings ruled the land, and nobody was above them. However, many of the kings were corrupt. This caused what was most likely a revolution; all we know is that the line of kings mysteriously disappeared from history. A new system of government was created; the republic. A republic is where people are elected to a group in the government, representing the area they were elected from. In states of emergencies, individuals were appointed to leadership. Those individuals had the power of a king but could only rule for 6 months. Not long before Jesus Christ was born, Rome was in one of these emergencies. A new leader, Julius Caesar, was appointed. The public generally favored him, and he became dictator for life. However, the Senate feared his power. He was murdered at a meeting. Proceeding his murder, a civil war erupted, with Caesar's friends on the winning side. They followed his path, and Rome was converted to an empire. The next dictator was Julius' nephew, Augustus Caesar. For the next 400 years, Rome remained an empire. A famous dictator, Marcus Aurelius, tried converting Rome back to a republic, but failed. He was mortal, like all of us, and died. After his death, the Roman Empire took a steep decline, its economy and leadership failing. In the 5th century AD, a group of German barbarians invaded Rome, and overthrew the empire. By then, the Catholic Church had a strong say in the government. Following the Roman Empire's collapse, a former barbarian was proclaimed Emperor of the newly created Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Empire failed to reachieve what the original Empire did, but existed for a long period of time during the Dark Ages. |
