~Promotion Requirements~
Landsman to Seaman: Purchase of the seaman uniform grants an automatic promotion to the rank of seaman.
Seaman to Gunner: Gunners are the experts at hurling shots accurately at the enemy. Promotion to Gunner is awarded to any seaman who shows prowess on the gundeck.
Seaman to Quartermaster: Quartermasters are superb at maneuvering ships in battle. Promotion to QM is awarded to seamen who can handle any ship.
Gunner/Quartermaster to Boatswain: Bos'uns are the Sergeants of the navy. Their job is to keep order among the lower ranks. Gunners and QMs who show leadership ability are awarded this rank.
Boatswain to Midshipman: Midshipmen are senior warrant officers, and are officers in training. Senior Boatswains, or prominent members of allied groups are given this position.
Midshipman to Acting Lieutenant: Once a Midshipman has held his rank for one week or more, he is eligible for promotion to Acting Lieutenant. At this rank, he will sit through an examination to test his ability as an officer.
Acting Lieutenant to Lieutenant: Acting Lieutenants are awarded an immediate promotion to Lieutenant upon successful (75% correct or greater) completion of the Lieutenant's Examination. Lieutenants are the captain's arms and eyes in battle, commanding the gundecks and sailing the ship should the captain fall.
Lieutenant to Commander: Commanders are the captains of smaller vessels, schooners and sloops. Lieutenants become commanders upon 1 months spent at Lieutenant rank, as well as 20 screenshot ship victories.
Commander to Captain: "Post Captains were the elite of the navy. They commanded the line-of-battle ships, the great slab-sided wooden monsters that ruled the waves." Promotion to Post-Captain is reserved for those who have 2 months as Commander, and 30 screenshot ship victories.
Captain to Commodore: Captains and Commodores are the same rank, the only difference is that Commodores command small flotillae of sloops and schooners, rather than a single ship. Often awarded to successful Captains who aren't senior enough for promotion to Admiral.
Captain/Commodore to Rear Admiral: Rear Admirals command fleets of frigates and small squadrons of lineships. The requirement for this rank is five months' service as a Captain or Commodore.
Rear Admiral to Vice Admiral: Vice Admirals command larger fleets, and multiple squadrons. One month as a Rear Admiral will usually gain an automatic promotion to Vice Admiral's rank, though it can be earned sooner by exemplary service.
Vice Admiral to Admiral: Admirals are the top flag officers, commanding vast fleets of lineships, and ruling over seas. Promotion to this rank is awarded to Vice Admirals who have spent 1 month at that rank, and have participated in at least one major linebattle.
