This thread would probably fit under All Things ROBLOX, but let's just say they wouldn't help me.
Are game ideas on ROBLOX copyrighted to them? Like if someone made a commercial game based off of Paintball! (by daxter33), would that be copyright infringement? I assume it would be, but I am not sure. |

No, paintball is generic. Daxter33 did not invent it.
Besides you can't copyright an idea or concept - only your actual implementation of it.

What does your last sentence mean? Apple sued Samsung just for using rounded edges on their phone |

did it work? These big companies beat the chests and make a lot of noise and threats but really they are just testing to see if they can get away with it. |

Nokia should've sued apple, for using round corners, since nokia 3310 had them earlier than iShizz.
K, dei win. |

They don't even change much....just comes with pre-installed updates to the operating system and a better CPU/camera...

@SN0X,
It is like how car companies release annual models with slight modifications. Through the use of effective mass-advertisement, people will feel socially pressured into purchasing one or do not care enough to look into exactly what is different and decide whether they actually want to upgrade. |

Despite what people are saying in this thread, it depends on the laws of your country.
In New Zealand that is completely possible.

So DrHaximus, if I lived in New Zealand, I could copy any game I wanted and not get arrested for it?

No... If you lived in New Zealand you could copyright ideas.
But USA law doesn't apply here either.

@Solotaire Except cars are an investment, you don't buy a new car model every year. You buy one once the features of the old one are no longer satisfying.
With an iPhone, there aren't necessarily feature updates, and yet people buy the new model even when they just bought the last one. Why? I'm not entirely sure. |

Although it may not directly answer the question, the ROBLOX Terms of Service provides information on copyright and intellectual property: http://www.roblox.com/info/terms-of-service |

| I guess Apple had a patent on the rounded corners, although, the lawsuit still makes no sense. |

@Ninja
Yes. On the government's FAQ page about copyright they explain that copyrighting ideas is completely legal, but proving you had the idea first is the hard part.

From the ToS: 6. If you create a game, author a model, or write something that catches our eye on a message board, we might want to use it on the site or elsewhere when talking about the site. If you're under age 18, remember to ALWAYS check with your parents before you send anything to us or post anything on the site! By sending in your content and comments, you (and your parents) are agreeing that it's okay to repeat on the site and elsewhere what you say, and it's even all right for us to use it in an ad. So, this means we can use it in any way we want, anywhere, until the end of time. |

@DrHax
Copyright protects the particular manner in which an idea is expressed or information is conveyed. It can’t protect mere information, >> ideas << , schemes or methods that can be expressed in other ways.
