(Note: This game was announced before Dayz. It's not a Dayz clone)
Ah zombies. No other classic horror monster has been such wimps in recent years. No other classic horror monster has become such cannon fodder recently. No other classic horror monster have become such punching bags nowdays.
What happened to when zombies were scary?
Sandswept (the creators of The Dead Linger) have a dream, and that dream is to make the undead hordes be a threat. But how will they make that dream come true? They are making that dream a reality by making a open world zombie game.
"A zombie game?" you ask
"Yes" I say
"Zombies being a threat in a new video game?" you say being as shocked as someone would if real zombies would happen.
"Yes" Says I
You then scrath your head in confusion
"Allow me to tell you about this game" I say calmly
And so the review begins
The Dead Linger is an open world zombie survival horror game in which takes place an undecided time after the infection started. Wanna know why the graphics look so basic? You'd be suprised to know that the graphics are bad for a reason other then it being early in development. The designers of the game haven't decided on an art style for the game yet. How many cars will be flipped over, how dirty the buildings look, and how wrecked the game world will be is undecided.
Anyways the game, unlike most other open world zombie games has a storyline. The storyline is that the HNZ virus (currently no reason why it appeared) has broke out and is spreading all over the world and now zombies are appearing, the authorities have tried to stop the virus however they failed, mass panic and riots break out, and more and more people are turning into walking corpses. Even animals are infected (zombie animals are not in the game currently but they are planned) and you decide to hide in your house while the world is becoming a living hell. Eventually you stop hiding (probably because you're out of food) and decide to go outside. There is no longer people screaming and gunshots everywhere, but there's now zombies everywhere.
The world is dead.
Your neighborhood is now filled with walking corpses.
Currenly there is no opening scene or anything, except that you spawn in a big subarban neighborhood.
This neighborhood is actully one of the games few biomes. The game has big 64,000km worlds however terrain generation is currently very basic. Theres currently only subarban neighborhoods, forests, farms, and prisions. Many houses are glitched up, look almost exacly the same, And contain similar items. But of course the game is planned to have the game world have generation so advanced the game world will look much more handcrafted. This subarban neighborhood is big and every house is enterable. That's right. Every building in this game is fully exporable. To be honest you can chill out and loot the neighborhood for hours and still have houses to spare, which alone is already a great concept. Not to mention that cities are planned for the future and currently in the unrealeased dev test builds, have buildings that are up to five stories high.
Along with the buildings to loot there are zombies that want you dead. Dozens of them. Unlike most other zombie game with portray zombies as target practice, The Dead Linger aims to have zombies be scary, and a threat. Another cool thing is that zombies can only be killed by badly damaging their head (melee) or shooting them in the head (firearms) Guns and ammo in The Dead Linger are quite common. But don't let that fool you into thinking that it's a zombie shooter. The Dead Linger is survival horror, and will only get more horror oriented as time goes one, as currently the games health system has slow natural healing, but is planned to have wounds that need to be healed with a healing item, bone breaking ( like having your leg break and walking slower,) and even being able to get infected, which is uncureable.
Melee in The Dead Linger is a bit overpowered in it's current state. Why shoot a zombie attracting 50 of them, when I can kill them by hitting them two times with a sledgehammer? The coming directional melee combat, and infection system should make melee be a very risky thing to do, however.
Anyways The Dead Linger, even though it's in pre alpha is a great game.
9.5

It looks like it's going to be great, but it could use quite a bit of work.
If it turns out how I expect it to it will be amazing though. |

| @meldo it's in very early development, and the dev team is small, however the dev team is very passionate about the game and alot of content is added in updates. The fact that there even letting people see their game this early in development shows you how much they want their dream to become reality. |

008 (upcoming update) is planned to have zombies be able to infect you. And apparently you won't notice infection at first. Another thing is that being infected with the virus is uncurable so when you're infected you're done. Sounds cool, mainly because it will make it risky to use melee combat. Melee combat currently is so OP.
Also the music in the game is sad... |

| I played the game earlier and I was in the middle of a field at night, and there were hordes of zombies. I used my pistol and shot one in the head then hordes of them started coming after me. I won the battle, and it was tough, and also really fun. |
