I am not asking this in a contintious manner, I just want to know what your thoughts are.
We all know, even Richard Dawkins admits, that all historians agree that there was a man named Jesus who caused up a stir in Rome. Not only that, but you will even find it in your history books the Exodus in the Bible and Moses freeing his people.
So, historically, we know many of these people, being more than people or not, existed.
My question to you, atheists, is if the Bible is an absolute lie, then for what purpose was it written? This could not have been "ramblings from old goat herders" as some say, because it accurately represents many parts of history, so whoever wrote it must have been educated of what was going on.

@IDTalk Please do not try and turn this into a flamewar. I said I am trying to present this question in a non-contentious manner. So please don't do that.
Thanks. :) |

@alnick
But, but what was the _purpose_?
Mien Kamp had a purpose of explaining HitIer's views. It did not explain historical events in a different light.
Well, the don't have to argue the purpose of what Paul wrote, because that's clear. But the account of Jesus and stuff, from John, and Luke, and Mark, and Matthew.
For what purpose do you believe they wrote it? |

Before I answer your your ultimate question, let me say two things.
1. I don't know where you're getting your information, but there are no educated Atheists who deny that Jesus was a real person. The Romans kept records of all their executions, and it is obvious that there was a Jew named Jesus who created new ideas that defied both Judaism and Roman Mythology, so he was crucified. 2. There's actually no archaeological or historical evidence that there was ever a man named Moses. For that matter, this is no evidence that there were ever 500,000 Jewish slaves in Egypt.
Now, for your ultimate question...
Who can say why the bible was truly written? It is a book written in humanity's immaturity. My greatest guess is that it was a way to give men hope. To think that there's some grand all-powerful being out there, watching out for them, making sure they aren't killed by their enemies... that thought can really reassure some people. But the stories kept getting larger and larger, until they became more than simply faith.
By the way, saying that the bible "accurately" represents parts of history is a lie. There are hidden references and certain excerpts that can match some events in history, but that does not mean that it is an accurate record of everything that has ever happened. In fact, almost every single story in the bible can also be matched to other stories in other religions.

@Little >"exactly how do we know jesus existed again"
The same way we know Ceasar, or even Shakespear. We use historical evidence and accounts of the time. |

| The Bible was not written as a whole, you know. It's a collection of various texts. There was not reason "The Bible" was "written". It's just a collection of texts that were mashed into one book. |

... what is this? I clearly stated that we both know this at the beginning and did the _opposite_ of accusing you people of _not_ knowing it.

You were phrasing your words as if you were trying to convince someone. Please accept that there can be multiple interpretations for anything you say.

Religion is based on mankind wanting answers. The questions being:
Where did we come from? What is our purpose? Where do we go when we die?
Mankind wants answers, they're written in the bible. The bible was written to provide answers.
