It is also a continent. Many are aware that the land of Atlantis has been sunken for 230 years. But it is still considered a Continent to many people.
Most people believe that it doesn't exist, or that it has never been found and it is full of gold.
Blame Hollywood for that image. Don't believe in movies. Look it up. |

There's only 4 if you ignore canals and mountain ranges. merge Africa, Europe, and Asia into the monstrously large Afro-Eurasian continent, and if you disregard the Suez then you disregard the Panama canal, so SA and NA are just one big America. We're down to four. If you take the ice off of Antarctica you see an archipelago of islands, not a single landmass, and the largest of these islands is smaller than Australia, so if we remove Antarctica as a continent then we don't have to name a ton of islands continents. But if Australia is a continent, does that makes Greenland a continent?
NOW, I bid you STAND, MEN, OF THE WEST! |

The question of course arising as to how big a mass of land must be in order to be a continent, without such a standard it could be both argued that there are no continents - that all landmasses are islands - and that there are many, many continents - that all landmasses divided by large bodies of water are continents even those such as the various Hawaiian islands or Madagascar.
Because Antarctica is the special child and I enjoy discriminating against Greenland, I prefer the 4 continent system involving America, Eurafrasia, Australia, and Antarctica. |

In my opinion, there's 8. Only difference is, here's mine:
-North America
-South America
-Antarctica
-Europe
-Asia
-Africa
-Oceania/Australia/Australasia
-The Middle East
I know the Middle East is in Asia, but I still class it as a continent. |

I think all of these could be true, but you guys are forgetting about Atlantis. There was a huge colonization there before it was sunken by the tectonic plates.

Atlantis was just an island.
The largest it probably would have been is the current size of Cyprus. |

"There's only 4 if you ignore canals and mountain ranges."'
Only it if a continent is a large landmass separated by water.
Which it is not.
"Because Antarctica is the special child and I enjoy discriminating against Greenland, I prefer the 4 continent system involving America, Eurafrasia, Australia, and Antarctica."
How is that more convenient than the 7 continent system? Or do you just like to be an edgy non-conformist rebel? |

"stalin isnt a communist"
Holy cow, we finally agree on something.
"Only it if a continent is a large landmass separated by water."
Which it is.
"How is that more convenient than the 7 continent system? Or do you just like to be an edgy non-conformist rebel?"
I don't particularly care about conformity or lack there of, this is merely what makes sense and is easier.
-It's easier to familiarize yourself with 4 continents than with 50,000 or what ever the hell your idea of a continent would bring forth (hint: it surely isn't going to be 7, especially with cultural divides taken into consideration rather than purely visible geological divides).
-This is what makes most sense. How is Europe and Asia a separate continent? They're very clearly connected, there is nil divide between them.
-We're going to familiarize ourselves with various regions anyways but that is not to say they all have to be continents, it really doesn't make sense to say that, say, the Arabian Peninsula is a continent because under the parameters you've laid out in previous threads it surely would be.
-Europe is a region not a continent, South America is a region not a continent, Brazil is a country not a continent, India is a country not a continent, regardless of whether you say otherwise or not. |

Atlantis is a HYPOTHETICAL continent. No concrete proof exists as of now. It is beehives that the legend of Atlantis is inspired by santorini a (formerly) small island that is now a volcanic caldera.
"Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera" from Wikipedia
It is now a group of islands
I think Atlantis was inspired by this because:
1) santorini is by Greece, and where did the legend start? Ancient Greece! 2) fishermen or survivors would have told their story, which over the years probably was exaggerated 3) it was destroyed in a spectacular way, and in a pretty short amount of time. The legend of Atlantis records the same thing happening to Atlantis.
"The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred some 3600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis." From Wikipedia
The story of santorini may have also merged with tales of doggerland, a (former) part of the European land mass that sunk. Seeing that is was quite large, it's tales could have merged with santorini's to create Atlantis.
While it is possible that a continent would have existed in the middle of the Atlantic, it would have probably sunk before humans evolved. But we can never know... |

I believe in Atlantis, that it was a Greek city-island from long ago.
Long ago, not 230 years. People would've noticed. |

| Nice theory there, Skipper812. But after my 1 minute brainstorming, I remembered that Atlantis is a lost, sunken city. Correction: They're 7 continents. They were 8. |
