Cool. I like Gnome2, don't really like Gnome3 all that much. Although Unity is nice too (I know it's got a lot of hate but I don't mind it). I love KDE though, I've got that running on my netbook which has Arch Linux on there (I installed Arch cuz I wanted to see if I could since it's one of the harder distro's to install, but I got it all working and it's perfect now and I love it :P).
I've also used Cinnamon a tiny bit, but not much (I used LinuxMint for about a week before switching to Arch to play with that and I believe LM uses Cinnamon on top of Gnome3).
My desktop is dualboot with Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium (both 64bit). I'm just using Unity on Ubuntu though. I dislike a few things about Unity however, and much prefer KDE over it or Gnome2, but if I give it enough time I'll get used to it. It looks nice at least. :P Just isn't as functional as I'd like it to be. |

omggggg its so cool that i keep finding more and more linux enthusiasts on rt it's like a sign of the linux empire that'll come in time
but yeah gnome 2 was the best cinnamon is basically just gnome 3 with a gnome 2 look and feel and that's why i love it lol
and yeah unity isn't the best but it's getting better every day
and yeah arch is a great distro gentoo without the headaches |

I <3 Linux. :P The old family PC I use for running servers (currently running a Minecraft server with a bunch of scripts to keep the thing working properly). It's also my alarm clock. :P It's also running Arch Linux, which was probably a bit of a mistake as that complicates my life 100million%, but that's okay, I did it so I could learn more about the Linux command line.
I had a website running on that thing once upon a time, it was a forums using phpbb and also had a front page. The front page was really simple, just a link to the forums and a picture (I'm not so great at HTML coding as I never use it). It was also running Ubuntu Server at the time, I think it was on 12.04 but I forget.
I use SSH to get onto that thing cuz I don't have a keyboard, mouse, or monitor attached (I do actually have a monitor attached I just never use it for that as it's easier to SSH into it from my desktop; plus it's attached to my desktop's second monitor).
I plan to switch to Linux completely eventually, it's just taking some time (I want to wait for all the games I play on Steam to get on there as Steam is now on Linux (I actually got into the early beta too :p which was cool; got it running on my netbook under Arch Linux but obviously couldn't play games on that thing)). However, source games (as in, games by Valve) currently lag really badly on Ubuntu (I've heard there's an issue with the OpenGL shaders which is the reason).
Arch is pretty fun to mess around with at times, other times it's very annoying. :P I'm using an older install disk though as it still has the AIF (Arch Installation Framework) on it. The newest version removed that because the guy who maintained it quit. They have installation scripts now instead, but I've yet to figure those out as I've yet to really play with them.
Linux is really taking over the world. It's already on most servers and networking equipment in the world (and has been on there for many years), and now because of Android it's on most smartphones and tablets in the world (as Android has 70% of the smartphone market). Now that Steam is on Linux a lot of people are going to be moving over to Linux, especially with Windows 8 out now.
As for my Minecraft server, I've got a bunch of scripts on there to do things like backup once an hour (which reminds me, the thing has probably completely filled the hard drives with backups by now). The reason for the constant backups is because I'm running the server on a 13 or so year old PC, and it doesn't have much RAM so it tends to crash a lot when multiple people are playing and because of this there's been a few times we've gotten world corruption. So I made the backups more frequent. I use screen to insert commands into the running server terminal (such as "stop" or "say").
There's also a script to start the server when the computer boots up (the computer is setup to reboot if it loses power and to automatically boot up everyday at a certain time just in case). I leave the thing running 24/7 though and it's yet to actually shutdown or anything as I have it on a battery backup along with my desktop. When the server crashes (yes, when :P (it's because it's running on old hardware without much RAM and such)) I've got another script that runs every minute to check if the server is running. If it's not it restarts it, otherwise it does nothing. And I've got an auto-update script which checks the md5sum of the minecraft_server.jar file with the minecraft_server.jar file it downloads from the website to see if there's an update. If there's no update the file that was downloaded is deleted and the server keeps running, otherwise the server runs the backup script then shuts down, deletes the old jar file and replaces it with the new one.
Also when it backs up the backups are dated. :P But I need to set that script up to delete backups older than a month or two otherwise I'm going to run out of disk space. :P
If you want I could post those scripts here. :P On Arch getting things to start on boot is challenging, at least, it was for me when I didn't know what I was doing (but it's all in the wiki so it's easy to learn). I use a crontab for all the scripts. I use my user's crontab when running any script that doesn't require root access, otherwise I use the root crontab. Originally it was all in root's crontab but for some reason the scripts wouldn't work properly when it was like that. |

"oh by the way there's a ppa for ubuntu that you can install cinnamon with if you dont like unity but want the new gnome 3 features"
I'll probably stick with Unity or switch to KDE. :P Although I might try Cinnamon at some point. But I find Unity only needs one or two tweaks, such as putting the applications you're running in the task bar rather than on the side bar and stop hiding the close, minimize, and maximize buttons along with menu buttons. I know there's a thing for that (I think it's called Unity Tweaker or Ubuntu Tweaker, not sure). There's a few tools like that out there though.
I don't really use Ubuntu on my desktop enough for that right now though; currently I'm mostly on Windows simply because my games work on there. :P But all the programs I really want now work on Linux without the need of using WINE. And the games I have are slowly moving over to Linux.
Basically my desktop is my only machine running Ubuntu, my other machines have Arch Linux on them currently. What I might do is just install Ubuntu Server and then put a UI on there such as KDE, as that wouldn't be too hard and then that way there wouldn't be a ton of programs I don't want/wont ever use. :P As the server version would be a more bare version of Ubuntu (even the server components, such as Apache, aren't installed unless you select them while installing for the first time/install them via apt-get install). |
