I like this definition better...
"association of people with similar interests: a club, society, or other organization of people with common interests or goals"
The others are a bit older, but groups structured like those do exist. Not all clans have very specific goals, they tend to be vague. (Which would be hard to count as a goal, which should be more specific). You won't reach it very easily in the meaning must be interpreted.
Anyway, adding the similar interests parts will sort of lock those clans in as guilds as well.

Guild is a synonym of clan - it is not a completely different term as you seem to be suggesting, nor is it used within the C&G community on a regular basis.
Clans & Groups may even be more useful - while both equivalent terms, group is more often used than guild. |

A clan is usually a family. A guild is usually related to a sort of trade. I wouldn't consider them synonymous.
