You are part of the british royal army, and you are sent on a deathmisson. No one will survive. If you wish to know about the battle, look below.
At 0730 hours on the 1st July, 1916, after a weeklong artillery bombardment launched the now infamous "Big Push" attack across the river Somme. With the French Army being hard-pressed to the south at Verdun the British intended to breakthrough the German defences in a matter of hours.
The mistrust that High Command had of the so-called "New Armies" manifested itself in the orders to the troops to keep uniformed lines and to march towards the enemy across no-man's land. This, coupled with the failure of the artillery bombardment to dislodge much of the German wire, or to destroy their machine-gun posts, led to one of the biggest slaughters in military history.
When the attack began the Germans dragged themselves out of their dugouts, manned their posts and destroyed the oncoming waves of British infantry.
After the first day, with a gain of only 1.5km, the British had suffered 57,470 casualties. Despite this, Haig pressed on with the attack until November 19th of the same year. For the meagre achievements, total losses on the British and Imperial side numbered 419,654 with German casualties between 450,000 and 680,000. When the offensive was eventually called off the British were still 3 miles short of Bapaume and Serre, part of their first-day objectives.

It starts with the sound of artillery guns, and you know its time to go. You walk outside your tent, and you see your squad. |

| Seeing my own squad close by, I meet with our squad captain. "So," I begin, "What's the plan?" |

| Your squad captain turns to you and says "Hello private, today we will be assaulting the main hill, but be advised! There are thousands of Germans, trenches, barb wire by the pound, machine guns, and artillery! Many of you will not make it today. Oh, I also forgot, There will be gas probably." He then hands you a gas mask. "We will be supported by the 104th british battalion, we will then storm the hill from the east, Any questions?" You hear a snicker from one of your squad mates. |

| I looked down at the mask, then back at the captain. "So, when do we start?" |

He points over at a point in the distance. "We will be hiking over there, Very soon when we hear the first artillery shots we will sprint up the hill."
Your squad starts hiking about a half a mile in the distance. |

| Finally, we reach the hillside. Though I manage myself not to tire myself out too much for the upcoming battle, I can see some of my comrades are exhausted. A foolish and fatal mistake. |

Your squad leader lines you up. There are 12 men including you. Your squad leader starts a speech.
"Today we will conquer! We will not fail! Many will die, but we will take this hill!"
You here a artillery barrage and your comrades and you start storming the hill. |

| I move with my men, only getting out of line to dodge the artillery or bullet strikes. |

| You are running to the first trench and out of nowhere, machine gun fire is dancing around you. Your comrades begin to go down fast. A artillery barage throws you off your feet and catapults you on your hands and knees. There are men getting mowed down all around you. |

| Quickly I reach for the closest cover I can find, laying my back against it and waiting for the machine gun to stop so I can continue onward. |

| You clamber over some barbed wire, into a trench. You notice something warm and stick on your leg, but you feel no pain yet. Your remaining squad members dive into the trench. You cant 7 out of 12 of them. |

| You see a series of small bleeding cuts. They are probably from the barbed wire, and you shrug them off. |

| You see none, the only thing is the next trench which is has several germans in it. You can see the machine gunner reloading, and you must make a decision fast. |

| I grab my grenade and throw it into the trench. Before the machine gun fire goes back up again, I fall back into my own trench. |

| You hear strangled crys and you fall back into your own trench right before machine gun fire rips threw the air where you were standing. You see one of your squad mates peek over the trench and fire several rifle bolts, and then he gets flown back and a couple bullet wholes decorate his face. |

| You are cautiously climbing in, and machine gun fire makes you dive in. You see several germans rolling around, seemingly incapacitated, several without limbs. |

| I shoot the ones that are incapacitated, with the exception of the ones without limbs- they will die soon enough, and pose no threat to me at the moment. I again wait for the machine gun fire to stop. |

You wait, but a artillery barrage knocks you off your feet onto a dead german. He then groans and you notice he has no limbs. He mutters. "Wasser.... Wasser..."
You feel a piece of shrapnel in your stomach, look down, and well enough there is a 3 inch long twisted piece of metal embedded in your stomach. |

| Quickly working, I take the shrapnel out and cover the wound, applying pressure so it stops bleeding (Or something like that. Admittedly I don't have much knowledge of medical stuff irl) |
