I notice that when a new traditional fantasy rpg comes out, a hell lot of people compare it to TES.
Not to burst your bubble or anything, but TES isn't quite original. When you think about it, the whole "Dragons, mages, elves, axe wielding dwaves" thing was done years ago by JRR Tolkien.
Can't we have a fantasy world that doesn't derive from that? Something new? |

| Agreed with that one, but there's still alot that do the Tolkien thing. Hell, even books still do this. |

You heard me, ONE. |

@awsum
Because it's hard to make an RPG set in modern times without using the concept of a zombie apocalypse.
@Original Post
There aren't dwarves in Skyrim. Elves are very limited to what they can do in magic, and certainly nothing compared to the Istari magic of Tolkien's world. And before you say "But what about the dwarf ruins", the Dwemer were elves. They were a species of subterranean elves. Falmer were Snow Elves. Dwemer. Are. Elves. Also dragons aren't really an original idea, dragons can actually date back to China, with painting of dragons and golden statues of dragons and lions. Also the Dwemer in Skyrim were a LOT more technologically advanced than Tolkien's elves. I'm pretty sure the Dwemer used steam or something to power their Dwarven Centurions, and on the spider workers you can even find oil.

| The Elder Scrolls has always been able (IMO) to put a twist on classic fantasy or, in Morrowind's case, create an entirely new world that stands apart from it. |

Yeah. I thought I was going to be able to kill Alduin right there at the Throat of the World, to be honest. Too bad I can't slay him there? Asassin, do you care to tell me why? I think it's because that was the Time-Wound where I fought him, and since he was sent forward in time there, killing him really wouldn't... work out, for some reason. The reason, I think, was because he was sent forward by an Elder Scroll, and since it's the Time-Wound, killing him might screw up time or something. Or maybe he's just invincible there? Also I find Alduin's dialogue to be a bit ironic, calling me arrogant then nearly being killed by me and still going on about how awesome he is.

Science fiction could work. Set in this time period, or the future.
People liked Mass Effect. |

Meh, plot holes.
He's going somewhere to regain his strength after your defeat of him. I'm not telling you where it is, since I'm not sure if the game's told you yet. You're close to the end of the questline, though. |

the problem with sci-fi rpgs is that they must have guns, and people like being able to actually shoot the guns. the problem is that you have to reach a compromise between shooter and rpg mechanics. deus ex failed miserably in that regard, fallout 3 & new vegas did an "average" job on that, borderlands 1 failed miserably, borderlands 2 was perfect.
anyway, everything is compared to skyrim because it's the first thing that comes up to peoples' heads when you mention any rpg. skyrim is a terrible game, but it sure is popular. |

@Asassin
I accidentally stumbled upon the dialog choice "I need to reach Alduin's portal to Sovngarde", so yeah, I think I know where I'm headed next after I trap that dragon. I don't know if that was the choice, but that's it. Also he said in the Elder Scroll when the ancient Nords tried to kill him that "You will die, knowing your final fate, when I come for you in Sovngarde." I just hope the portal isn't guarded by a Draugr Deathlord or Dragon Priest.

| I usually think of turn-based RPGs when somebody mentions RPGs. |

I find that odd. Let me tell you why:
1. RPG stand for "role-playing game". 2. One of the big things about role-playing is character development and growth. 3. Growth is usually represented in-game by the changing of in-game statistics. 4. These "stats" usually relate to gameplay centred around combat.
What else are you doing? Becoming a successful farmer, getting married, and living happily ever after?
What kind of game is that? [obligatory snort here]
(After I finished the list, I realized that there are RPGs completely without combat, and I knew an example of one.) |

What about stats including Charisma, Wisdom, Intelligence, etc.? The idea of role-playing is that the player is allowed to, well, play a role of their choice. Role-playing games are designed to make sure players have fun doing so. If the player wishes to play a pacifist character, so be it. (A good example of a game that contains plenty of combat but isn't lacking in other elements is actually Morrowind.) |

I agree because if I didn't I'd be wrong.
But intelligence is sometimes how one's magical power is determined.
(Harvest Moon is a game entirely almost entirely about farming and developing relationships. It's an RPG. Just an FYI.) |

| Harvest Moon's an RPG-Life simulator hybrid. Like Animal Crossing meets Final Fantasy with a touch of *shudder* Farmville. |
