3:20 – Waters close to RAT Borealis
The speedboat clipped the water, foam rising in a crescendo of liquid on both flanks of the boat designed for stealth and speed in tandem. Along both sides of the boat, soldiers straddled the side of the boat, clipping down their equipment, checking and rechecking their rifles, prepping their side arms and equipment, and going over the plan of attack drawn up by their leader. He stood next to the driver, standing tall in the wind, holding his Stetson, his custom built rifle slung across his chest. Behind him, the two once bewildered VS agents were checking their SCARs and weaponry, ready for the landing planned at Borealis.
“Borealis in 500 clicks, Sir.”
3:08 - RAT secret mountain facility
The insides of the facility were damp, dusty, and dark. As the boots of the two Vortex Security Officers swiftly manoeuvred through the corridors, deeper into the facility, dust was thrown up into the air, to be reflected through the torch beams mounted on the shoulders of both MARIOCRUSHER and VERT752. The two turned a corner deeper into the freezing facility, their breaths visible in the frosty air, to find the facility in yet more and more turmoil. Filing cabinets were flung across the floor, and fabric was strewn everywhere. MARIO opened a side door, only to find the other side blocked by a pile of metal office furniture. “Looks like they didn’t mess around here… blocked up everything, taken anything of use, by the looks of it…” Muttered MARIO to VERT, poking at a cloth on the ground with his SCAR. VERT had headed down a smaller staircase, to inspect an airlock-esque door, which was jammed stuck with a desk, and a key card hammered into the key card slot next to the door. The window on the door, smashed, did not show much in the further room, and the wire mesh of the window was smashed and bent into an unrecognisable shape.
“MARIO, get down here, need your help with this!” VERT hollered, before pushing his armour clad shoulder against the desk, and giving a shove. He felt the rubbish stuck in the door give a little, before it fell back against him, nearly making him slip over on the icy floor. He pushed again, before feeling the whole desk flip forward as MARIO joined him. The desk crashed down on the floor the other side of the door, with the sound re-echoing repeatedly through the deserted halls of the facility. VERT raised his rifle, as he shimmied through the opening in the door, to the room beyond.
“They’ve cleaned the place out!” MARIO heard VERT yell through, before MARIO moved to squeeze himself through the gap. The going was tough, given that VERT had released the mechanism of the door slightly, and the gap was smaller, but he eventually made it through, metaphorically popping out the other side as he moved his combat armour through. The room was a mess; desks that would’ve contained desktops were blank and thrown over on the ground, with the drawers ripped out and tipped across the floor. A hole in the ceiling opposite a whiteboard, where an overhead projector would’ve been, was empty, with nothing but a few cut wires hanging out of the empty orifice. Cabinet doors thrown open, bags cut open in the bag with combat knives – the room had been stripped by a workforce that had wanted to leave quickly. While VERT busied himself, trying to extract the bullet-riddled hard drive from a server casing in the corner of the room, VERT had noticed a pile of chairs in front of what appeared to be a door in the corner of the room. He moved over, and getting a strong hold on the base of one of the stacks, lifted, to watch the pile of chairs topple down against a cabinet behind him. He found what appeared to be a similar door to the one they had entered through – except the windows were blacked out, and the key card slot empty. “VERT, seen anything we can use to open this?” “Yeah actually, come look at this…”
MARIO walked back; to find VERT next to the staircase they had come down, on one knee. He was looking at a small amount of rubble on the floor, and while MARIO looked on, confused, VERT took off his combat glove, and picked up a circuit board out of the rubble. “HQ, this is Snow Leopard 1, you seeing this?” VERT said, pressing the receiver button linked to his in kit radio, and headset. “Roger, SL1. Downloading a co-ordinate grid now, so you can get that in use using your PDA.” Came a robotic reply from his earpiece. VERT and MARIO headed back to the door, VERT slotting the circuit board into a specially designed slot in his PDA, before linking it via wiring to the key card slot. After a few minutes of computer work and downloads through the PDA, the doors hissed, before opening to reveal an elevator. The two stepped in, slinging their rifles in front of them. “Only one level to go to.” Laughed VERT, before the doors hissed close, and the elevator descended into the frozen darkness below.
2:58 – VS Command Centre beneath Fort Vulcan 2
The Command Centre was a hub of noise, shouting, tanoys and haste. Assault was beginning on the RAT bases, to force the hostile state into submission, and this required the full force of Vortex Security to co-ordinate and report the proceedings. Officers and troopers alike sat at crowded computer consoles down in the lower section of the Command Centre, relating commands, following statistics, and fighting the war from VS from a virtual perspective. In the higher offices adjacent to the main Command Centre, High Ranks sat in meetings with allied representatives, who were offering squads, counsel, and negotiating terms with the High Command of VS. Low ranks ran to and fro among the lines of computer workers, up and across the walkways throughout the Command Centre, and into the rabbit hole of tunnels outside of the Command Centre, going about their duties with priority – every element of the conflict could depend on their speed and perseverance.
Up above, standing at the window over the Command Centre in his office, Chibitobi watched over his workers, moving like bees at their business. He hadn’t slept since the beginning of recent events, but it didn’t show – his uniform remained clean and crisp, his hair on edge, and he had had time to shower. At this point, he heard a quick knock on his door, followed by a frantic Sergeant bursting through his door, and standing to attention in front of Chibi’s desk. Groaning under his breath, chibi pushed himself to move over, and sit down in his office chair. “Sir, urgent news from the RAT frontline.” SergentGHDaniel shouted, still at attention.
Chibi muttered an inaudible response, to which the Sergeant took as a gesture to begin. He opened a document folder under his arm, and began to read off the recent reports. “Assault has begun on Celeste II, and troops are moving towards Borealis, although we’ve lost contact with various units, and some are under attack on routes to Borealis. The enemy forces above us have been fully repelled, and all prisoners have been moved and logged into our cells. The enemy Commanders have delivered intelligence regarding Celeste, and as such, our strike teams have moved past the main RAT battle line to attack Borealis.” The Sergeant related. “Good work. Anything else?” Chibi groaned. “Permission to speak freely, Sir.” This evoked a further groan from Chibi, and he reluctantly waved the Sergeant ahead anyway.
“Get some sleep, Sir.”
2:47 AM - Near RAT Borealis
Bullets rattled off the boot of the VS jeep, as ttom25rocks cursed, bringing his head down again. The RAT troops that had ambushed his two jeep convoy had rolled barricades out of the bush on the flanks of the road, and now took cover behind these barricades, coming out of them and moving in and out of the bush, in and out, to fire volleys of fire upon the VS troops hiding behind their sabotaged cars. The tires were ruined, and they wouldn’t be moving anywhere down the highway anytime soon. Ttom checked his partner, OhJustBiteMex3, to his left, who was crouched on one knee, pressing herself against the left back wheel of their jeep. Ttom could see the blood across the front seats of the jeep of their driver, Blox999, before smashing out the front passenger side window with the butt of his SCAR.
“What are you doing?!” Yelled OhJ over the fire, to which she met no response from ttom, as he smashed through the front window too, before placing his SCAR against the window, and firing at the nearest barricade. He caught a RAT troop off guard, and heard someone yell in agony, before a plume of red was cast through the air, and a body hit the floor lifeless. OhJ looked around her; along with herself and ttom from the first jeep, there had been 5 troops with them in the backup jeep – of which one lay dead, slumped in the front passenger seat. The others were huddled behind their jeep, although one was wounded, with a bullet through his shoulder. That left only her, ttom, and two troopers, whom she saw to be Staff Sergeant Grey987, and 1st Lieutenant McBlub. While ttom signalled to the others to maintain suppressive fire on their assailants, OhJ carefully shifted around behind the wheel of the jeep, to get a view of the enemy. Checking from the firing patterns, she counted roughly 6 or 7 enemies.
“Keep firing, pin them down!” Ttom yelled over the gunfire, kicking OhJ with his boot. However, she had a plan. “You, the medic! Give the wounded guy’s flashbang to grey!” Before the medic could elicit a response, she shouted again to him, inaudibly over the gunfire, and he retrieved the flashbang from the soldier’s front chest pocket, before passing it to the Staff Sergeant next to him. “Grey, roll it over to me, but make sure it DOESN’T get to me! Make sure it stops halfway!” “Wha-?” “JUST DO IT, THEN EVERYONE TURN AWAY AND COVER YOUR EARS” Grey, despite being bewildered by the bizarre request under fire, did so, before turning into a foetal position, same as OhJ and the others, and covering his ears.
Within the next ten seconds, there was a deafening bang and a seething flash of white. OhJ turned and moved out of the cover of the car, aiming her SCAR, as she heard screams of pain from the other side of the conflict. Aiming at a RAT troop taking his eye off his rifle scope, which he had clearly used to shoot the flashbang, she fired, and watched as his head whipped back, before he slumped to the floor. Another troop tried to shift into cover, but was cut short as she strode out, firing a volley of SCAR rounds into his side before he could get back behind cover. OhJ saw a RAT troop unaffected by the flashbang rush out of the undergrowth on her left flank, but, raising her SCAR to her soldier, she aimed quickly, and double tapped his chest, leaving him to fire a round into the air as he fell backwards, dead. On each side of her, the other armed VS members moved forward, just as a RAT member armed with a heavy machine gun rose from behind a barricade, to be silenced by a firing squad of SCARs. As he fell backwards, covered in blood, the team heard a shout of two solitary words from further behind the barricades.
“WE SURRENDER”
*Due to the anniversary of this story being this month, I'll be trying to get the final chapters (roughly 4, 5?) done in time for that. This'll mean really regular releases. Hope you enjoyed*
