Please don't tl;dr, this is a very real and serious story I want to share with OT.
In my dad's high-school, everyone was split up into cliques, with different kids of people in them. That's normal for schools, people go into their social groups and talk to people who are like them and for the most part, don't deviate from them. But the cliques in my dad's school were different, they were more akin to gangs. Interactions between cliques were fairly hostile, and the people within the cliques were more tightly packed than your average high-school social group. Many of the school's administrators knew about this, and tried many times to get them to go out and talk to others, with group projects and other stuff. None of it worked though.
One of the groups in particular was a rowdy group of people who many of the other groups would say were the most outgoing, but in a bad way. They would wait until another group member was by him/herself and go and beat them up. Bad. A lot of the encounters ended in broken limbs or very painful injuries. My dad thinks that single group is the reason people stayed so close together, and why other groups were unfriendly to other ones. That one group forced the other students into making tribal like relationships, with all the other tribes as scary and dangerous territories.
One day that group, let's call them the Ruffians, took things, far, far over the edge however.
In the 3rd quarter of the school year of the Ruffians' and my dad's senior year, the gang started to tone down a bit. The other groups figured it was just because they got tired of harming the new kids who hadn't found a group yet, but others started to figure there was some behind the scenes shady junk. The Ruffians weren't dumb, they could execute their plans methodically and swiftly. For example, on the junior year school trip to New York they beat up one of the students who couldn't sit with his group by timing the subway doors so that they could pull him onto the subway platform while the rest of the children went away, watching him being pounded into the concrete, being unable to do anything to help their fellow group member.
Back to what I was saying though, about the Ruffians and 3rd quarter. One day one of the students had completely disappeared. He had left to go to the bathroom during first period and never came back. Normally students go with another group member to protect themselves from other groups and to report back to the rest of the group if one of them was harmed during the trip, but the rest of this boy's group was sick with a mad stomach virus, leaving him alone. A lot of the students covered up for the Ruffians (everyone suspected they were the reason the boy, lets call him VictimA, was missing), even if they didn't like them. This was for two reasons:
A. The Ruffians would probably find out and beat them silly
B. Many of the Ruffians had gang connections and messing with the Ruffians would spell death for anyone. This is also why no group revolts against them.
Everything was going good until lunch period. It was a sunny day out so the school permitted everyone to eat outside, but when people got outside they saw a terrifying sight. VictimA was tied up to a pole, on the top of the school dangling from the edge. All of the Ruffians stood behind him, holding knives and laughing hysterically. There was also a gun next to them, but we'll get to that in a bit. A lot of students called out to the Ruffians and VictimA, but the Ruffians didn't listen and VictimA couldn't really do much. Students tried to get a hold of teachers, but today the lunch duty teachers were not at lunch, and the school doors had been locked, even though they normally weren't.
So the groups decided to take action.
Many of the groups, including my Dad's, started to scale the walls of the building. The window sills were set up weird, making each ledge like a rung of a ladder. This made it easy for the groups to get up there. The remaining groups, mainly the younger kids, started throwing rocks at the Ruffians. This didn't phase them at all and continued to laugh and poke VictimA with knifes, making tiny chicken pox like dots down his back and arms. Then the groups reached the top of the school, to face off with the Ruffians.
So the groups stood there, united. Almost like a cliche ending to a JRPG, but it happened. The Ruffians didn't really seem to care that the groups were there, but their presence is probably what made them start slicing the ropes keeping VictimA still of the living. The groups tried to rush them, but a Ruffian picked up that gun I mentioned earlier and pointed it at VictimA. Students below began getting together cloth and leaves at the spot they believe VictimA would fall, while others threw rocks at the Ruffians still. No one had cell phones at the time, so no one could call the police. VictimA sweat bullets as each rope, tied specifically so a Ruffian could slice them one by one and keep everyone in suspense.
Then, two people of a group walked forward with their hands in the air. They were planning to fake surrender and free VictimA while the Ruffians weren't paying attention. This fooled the Ruffian wielding the gun only for a moment, but it was enough to make her tense her grip on the gun ever so slightly less and miss VictimA when she pulled the trigger and hit another Ruffian instead. The one cutting the ropes specifically. The groups used the moment to rush the Ruffians and overwhelm them enough to free VictimA. Then, a Ruffian pulled out another gun.
He did not fire into the crowd though, he merely pointed it at the group causing them to step back, then shot himself. Then the next Ruffian picked up the gun and shot herself. And this went on and on, the group members in total shock until it reached the last Ruffian. This Ruffian picked up the gun, but then pulled out a flare gun, pointed it towards a small clearing in the forest, and shot the flare directly towards it. A man came out, look up at the final Ruffian, and ran back inside.
Then the final Ruffian ended his life.
Afterwards, after a police investigation, they found a list with names of students they were planning to kill. VictimA being first, then many other names to follow. There was only one student per group, with no group meaning to lose more than one student. Luckily, the other students were able to put a stop to this.
Later that month, many of the major shady gangs in the area all turned themselves in, with others committing mass suicide by drowning/hanging themselves. No one knows why, but they do know it had to do with what happened that day. It's possible each child had connections to the gang and needed to be disposed of, or that it was an initiation for the Ruffians into the gangs. My dad has never found out why it happened, but he knew he was a part of it.
There wasn't any major media coverage of the event, even though there probably should have been. My dad thinks the some of the parents of the Ruffians paid out large sums of money to make the media keep quiet, and I think he's probably right.
Not going to do my president siggy tonight, just wanted to share something with you guys.
Thanks for listening.
