Apocalypse Rising runs with about 38,000 bricks in a full server. Thanks to featherweight, this is easily playable on most PC's. However, some players report that not all bricks render as well as they should. Houses and baseplates are among those objects that appear invisible to some players.
Unfortunately the only way to prevent this from happening is to reduce the brick count.
Thankfully, there are plenty of bricks that can be hacked from Apocalypse Rising without jeopardizing the general appearance of the map. (No 30% of the baseplate being removed this time)
BUILDINGS: Long ago, when I knew featherweight was just around the corner, I redesigned the Apocalypse Rising buildings to make them a higher quality. I thought that featherweight would be more effective than it is. (Max brick count of 50K or more?) Due to my modifications, about 3,000 relatively unnecessary bricks were added to the map. Keep in mind this was just from buildings.
TREES: Don't even get me started. The trees and rocks in Apocalypse Rising end up being about 12,000 bricks. But they look so good. Thankfully I should be able to hack a brick or two out of those trees and reduce that count by 4,000 or so. I could also remove a brick from the trunk of every tree, which would reduce brick count by even more. But then the trees would have square trunks.
Basically, with some very arduous redesigning, I could reduce the brick count by about 7,000 in Apocalypse Rising.
PROS: You would have less invisible bricks that aren't rendering, and your FPS would increase.
CONS: The trees would look a little bit worse, and the buildings would also decrease in visual quality.
TWO QUESTIONS: Should I proceed with reducing the brick count in the trees and buildings?
As an added bonus, should I make the trunks of trees SQUARE? (Reducing the brick count even further)
Thanks, Gus

You should proceed with reducing the brick count in the trees and buildings. What you're saying is, basically this will only impact the aesthetic portion of the game. But I've had this invisible problem, and sometimes it keeps me from playing the game; walls don't appear, and I can't find my way in or out of buildings. Although looks are great to a game, if they heed the gameplay it is something that should be removed. I vote yes.
If it helps, the trunks should be square. |

Honestly, I think you should Gus. The game is amazing through and through, and Quality does matter. But, If I love the game as much as everyone else does, I'd go and say, Hey, Square trees doesn't matter. I want the best game-play this game can offer. So, If I were you, I would no doubt Reduce the Brick count. -Pepsi |

I seriously say no. There comes a point where not everybody can play this game, and the lag profiling as-is is good enough. I would instead focus on better placement of these assets, with less "random" rocks and trees in the middle of nowhere and more of them on the outskirts of town, seeing as the only use is as cover/concealment. I'd rather see smarter tree/rock placement, and I wouldn't mind if rock size/amount were decreased considerably.

I think you should, it would make it less laggy for those who can play it already and let others play it... BUT DO NOT MAKE TREES SQUARE PLEASE.

Gus, I think, perhaps, you should for the buildings but only EDIT the trees. I vote yes for the first one, no for the second.

I say yes the invisibility problem is a big issue for me it takes sometimes 5 minutes to load the place. This problem potentially hurts my gameplay for when a bandit attacks me and I cant find the door out of a building.

I don't think you should. I have a fairly average laptop and I can run the game fine at 30 fps.

I have an idea: Make another version with the lag reduction, an leave this like it is. If you don't agree, and I know some people are gonna be itching to post a negative reply to this, don't. Gusmanak, consider this please. If you don't, I'm fine with square trees.

Well, I think you should. Well, in a better idea, you should take out leaves in different parts of the tree so trees look different and it looks like the leaves are decaying. If I'm wrong, and you can't do that without adding bricks, then just take some out! Nobody cares if you trees look bad. Maybe you might but we wont.

I say Yes cause I download lots of stuff so when I play while Downloading I get killed from Mild Lag once every few times from Zombies to Bandits to Survivors even plunged out of the Map. Although this is my fault I must not play while downloading or play when I'm not downloading.

Square trees are fine, there's not much difference.
Also, some of your houses have 3 bricks for a wall, when you can just have one brick to make a wall. It may be part of your plan to reduce, but I am simply pointing it out.
So yes, you should reduce bricks.

Do not reduce the brick count. The invisible bricks will render eventually.
