RPGs are by far my favourite genre of game, so I was wondering, what are your top 3 RPGs and why?
1) The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings The game provides a fluid and at first challenging combat system, along with gorgeous graphics, choices which actually affect something, great locations, a SUPERB storyline, and a generally awesome array of characters within the game. I was surprised when I first bought this, because I didn't realise how amazing it would be.
2) Dragon Age: Origins Overflowing with content. You could put over 100+ hours into this game and not regret it. While it doesn't have the greatest combat system, I like the way you can switch between your party members to organise attacks while the game is paused, providing an essence of strategy. Great characters along with a good storyline, and a large array of weapons and armour. The game has somewhat muddy graphics, however.
3) Mass Effect 2 Mordin Solus is the best alien ever in gaming. Anyways, it's great how you can import your character from ME1, and how the ending is effected by your performance throughout the game, and whether or not you bothered to prepare your team. The visuals are rather good, tied in with a reasonable combat system, great setting, reasonable story, and some of the best characters EVER. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWJcwmjM8mE
Two Bioware games? Madness!

Haven't been able to play any Mass Effect games, but I'll probably start soon enough.
I loved BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: The Sith Lords. |

Witcher 2 wasn't really an RPG in my opinion. One of the greatest games I've ever played, but not an RPG really. It was more of a free-roaming Action-Adventure game to me.
My favorites are...
1. The Fallout series
I can't decide between the four. (haven't tried Tactics yet, but I have it installed. I'll play it as soon as I finish 2) This series is amazing. Life in a post-apocalyptic wasteland is unforgettable.
2. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
The elder scrolls has never ceased to amaze me. Skyrim had a vast, open world were I could do anything and have fun doing it.
3. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Oblivion is the father of Skyrim. While Skyrim had a great open world, Oblivion had an excellent story.

It's considered an RPG anyways, so I put it there; I can see the RPG elements in it too. Also I see you're a Bethesda fan. Fallout 3 would be my number 4 on the list.

1) Elder Scrolls: Morrowind - Introduced me to RPGs and by far one of the better ones to this date.
2) Fallout 3 - It was fun to play around in and had a decent story. I didn't like New Vegas as much.
3) KotOR II - The 3rd RPG I ever played (KotOR I being 2nd) and was an excellent experience. I have many, many hours in this game. |

TES' Combat has always been terrible-average. I'd say out of my top 3 games DA requires good equipment the most, with a bit of strategic sugar.

@Explicit
I know it's considered an RPG, I just feel it shouldn't have been. I can compare it with Bioshock. Bioshock is very much like The Witcher 2. You don't get to create your own character, and you don't get to necessarily build him. You can upgrade the abilities you can do, but you can't pick them out yourself. Bioshock was free-roaming and your decisions affected gameplay and outcome. Yet, Bioshock is considered an FPS.
I may be ignorant on what makes an RPG, but I felt TW2 was lacking several key components to be an RPG.
But if you still want to call TW2 an "RPG," I guess I would replace Oblivion with it.
