TITLE: A Firefight to Light The Sky
Captain Bellamy ran as quickly as his legs could take him to the steering terminal, jerking the vessel sharply to the left to avoid the incoming Scouters. It felt for a heart-stopping moment that the whole ship would turn its belly to the black sky, but the auto-stabilizer he had implemented recently righted the problem. "Seawatcher, what's the situation?" "Two incoming Scouters, due West." "Excellent," the captain sighed. He did not pursue a criminal career for the riches or power. The thrill of being above the law brought a certain feeling to him, as if he in some way was superior to his fellow citizens. The feeling diminished as he got older. The pirate vessel shot three guided missiles, made specifically to bypass any sort of coded shields as well as track non-heat sources. They were developed with the government's manpower and money, but the pirates put them to better use than the Federation ever would. With a low rumbling and then a loud bang, all three missiles hit their target. The two incoming Scouters exploded into a fiery mass, turned into flaming debris floating in the ocean. The Federation vessel was hit in the side and began to sink rapidly into the depths of the dark water. This meant war. Present Time 30 years have passed since the Atlantic Federation launched their global campaign against us Privateers. Yes, that's what we call ourselves. Why? Because 'Pirate' has a negative connotation, and we try to avoid that. Besides, pirates are unwashed, bearded vagabonds who had fewer teeth than they had limbs, and too many diseases to count, and we are most certainly not like that. Anyways, things have gone from bad to worse. After the war ended, the Federation turned right around and started launching attacks on known pirate strongholds. One by one, the best and brightest of us fell at the hand of the Federation's dreadnaughts, and their unstoppable fleet was an unstoppable force which broke whatever little sense of honor we Privateers had amongst ourselves. (If you really did read this all, put "Aye, Captain", instead of "Aye Aye, Cap'n" in the "Other" section of your Character Sheet) When the time came to face down the armada, most of us turned and ran. These deserters, these mutineers, were the only ones to survive the massacre. It's been about 20 years since then, and now we Privateers are few and far between. It's a struggle to survive out here, with the Government still hunting us down. But there is still hope for us yet. The armada is now stretched thin, with so much ground to cover and so few of us left. This war started on their terms...but it'll end on ours. Setting: This takes place in 2066, where large-scale oceanic travel is a common means of transportation, while air travel is reduced to short-ranged VTOL craft used for ship-to-ship or ship-to-surface transfers. Two major world powers, the Atlantic Federation and the Pacifican Alliance, have been at war for decades. During this length of time, piracy has resurfaced en masse, both through privateers hoping to strike it rich and professional pirates hired by either side of the conflict to damage the enemy's supply lines and harry their military forces. When the Atlantic Federation broke the stalemate by severely crippling the Pacifican Alliance, and forcing them to comply to their terms, they set their now-idle military to deal with the pirates by any means necessary, including genocide. Now, the Federation patrols the seas for any remaining pirates, while those that were once thought as kings of the seas now hide in the shadows of the deep, waiting for the moment when they can reclaim their seas for themselves.
The Ship: The D.B. Cooper, a submarine roughly the size of an aircraft carrier fitted for seaborne warfare above and below the waves. The D.B. Cooper sports six torpedo tubes, a ship-to-ship missile rack, and four deck-mounted rail-cannons. The missiles and rail-cannons cannot fire underwater, so they collapse into compartments in the ship's hull before the ship goes under, sealing them away from the elements while underwater. The ship runs on a nuclear reactor, which is supplemented by solar power when the ship is close enough to the surface. There is also a small launch bay for Longboats, small, multiperson VTOL aircraft used for scouting missions and general transport.
ROLES:
Not actively fighting roles: Seawatcher: Watches the surroundings with either a camera on the top of a tower on the ship, or a "free-cam", a small, spherical pod with an in-built camera. They are also in charge of the radar system. "Rationeer": Guy who makes and distributes food to all crew members. Dubbed "Grubber" by most of the crew. Their job is to take the fish, grind it down, and turn it into a decent meal. Captain: Leader of the ship, established the whole organization single-handedly. F.M: First mate. Second in command of the ship. Comms: Group of people working on communication. A singular member is called a "Commsman" by most members of the crew. Supplier: These are quite possibly the most important members. They take longboats down into the ocean, where they use an electrified net to stun and capture fish that are near the surface, which are then send to the grubber for processing. Salvager: The salvager's job is straightforward, yet complex: Whenever a prize is seized, be it ship, technology, or otherwise, the Salvager is tasked to make it work for the rest of the crew. This could mean anything ranging from stripping weapons off of a recently-claimed ship to hacking through a firewall to open a safe.
Rules: 1. No Godmodding. For those of you who don't know, this means, basically, that making your character overly powerful is against the rules. 2. No Mary Sues/Gary Stus. This means that no one is without flaws, so therefore your character isn't. Making your character perfect is against the rules. 3.No PVP without a very good reason. We are all part of the same crew, here. Mutiny will be dealt with appropriately. If you do find a reason to PVP, then give the other player a chance to react. Example of a good PVP post: Player 1: I swing my cutlass at Player 2's Arm. Player 2: I react quickly, pulling my arm out of the cutlass' reach before it is cut off. Note that you cannot dodge EVERYTHING, and will likely not go through this thread unscathed. IT CAN'T JUST GRAZE YOU EVERY TIME. 4. With other things, such as romance and cursing, do it at your own risk. If you are banned, you are banned, and it is no one's fault but your own. 5. DO NOT KILL PLAYERS WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. I cannot stress this enough. If you are going to kill someone, it must be with their cooperation and permission. 6. Put "Aye Aye, Cap'n" in the "OTHER" slot of your Character Sheet to confirm that you read and understood the rules. 7. Admins are always right. Unless they're wrong, in which case they're right. If a person is not following the rules, ignore that person's action in the RP and an admin will handle it if/when they're online.
