I am writing to you with reference to a recent experience in one of your stores (Colne, Lancashire.) I have been a customer of ASDA’s (and various other companies within The Walmart Group) for many, many years. Usually I find your staff to be both pleasant and knowledgeable – none more so than Andy O’Donnell AKA ‘Andy Asda’ who works in The Rawtenstall store. I may add that Foyez Alam of your Burnley store is also extremely helpful. On my visit to Colne ASDA’s yesterday I decided to treat my colleague (Luke Richards) to lunch in your Cafe. My initial upset was that you stop serving cooked breakfasts at 12 noon. This is only a minor frustration however. I browsed the extensive menu and I noticed that you served ‘Award Wining Steak Pie’ – perfect. A more than adequate alternative for The Cooked Breakfast (or ‘Full Monty’ to give it it’s advertised title.) I opted for the Steak Pie on the basis that it had seemingly won a recent accolade. I was intrigued however as to what this was. So I enquired with one of the young ladies in the canteen as to what award it had won. I was slightly taken aback at the ladies response – she did not know what award it had won. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and suggested she enquired with her colleagues. Whilst she did this I pondered what awards this pie had won. Was it the succulent steak filling? Was it the pastry? was it a combination of the two? Had it solely competed against other steak pies or was the award even more prestigious having fought of competition from other savoury snacks? Had it been in contention against other established brands such as Hollands and Pukka? I really did not know. The pleasant lady returned after enquiring with the kitchen staff and I eagerly awaited the response. I was alarmed at the response. Not only did the lady who was taking the orders not know what award it had won, nor did any of the kitchen staff. As you can understand I am truly upset at this. The whole debacle destroyed my dining experience. I cannot fathom why ASDA’s are advertising and promoting this product with supposed awards when it seems that it may not in fact have won one. If it has surely the catering staff should be acutely aware of what it is, why it won it, when it won it etc. I really feel that this needs addressing and some form of communication and training needs passing to the catering staff. They are only doing their job. But it is ASDA’s job surely to educate their staff as to what they products they are selling. The whole episode left a really sour taste in the mouth. Not too sour as I opted for the lasagne with a side salad, a portion of chips and a pot of tea. Luke selected the same (less the salad.) So what I would like to know now is: What award did the pie win? When did it win it? How long does the award last – will it need to re-compete for it? Can the catering team be briefed on any awards their products have won? Are the staff fully aware of the contents of the produce they are selling the consumers? If you could provide some kind of timescale on when I can expect feedback it would be appreciated. As trivial as this issue may seem it really has put me off the Whole ASDA’s dining experience. Until I get some answer’s on this I will not be returning to dine in the Cafe and will take my custom elsewhere (although not to Morrison’s as I recently experienced a dining disaster in their cafe.) I look forward to your response. I can be contacted by email, phone or text. Yours faithfully CaptainN00b. |
