I have played Roblox for five years, and up until now, I have been enjoying it. I am a major fan of sandbox games, and I told myself that I wouldn't quit Roblox until it became pay to play and I actually couldn't play anymore.
I am starting to regret that decision.
Just today, I have found myself with ideas for places, but I quickly give up because I don't know how to build the places because there's not a lot of tutorials on how to start building places, and even if that wasn't a problem, I wouldn't be able to keep up with all of the fancy tricks and upgrades that are almost required to have what others consider a "good place", and even if THAT wasn't a problem, it would never get any recognition.
And I used to be fine with the quality of places on Roblox. Sure, 90% of it is garbage, but that is true to anything, but it was worth waiting for that 10% of an enjoyable game. But as it stands, I am no longer willing to wade through several hundred piles of cow manure one passes off as a place to get to a flawed diamond that is either undiscovered or is discovered and doomed to be forgotten.
The community is worse. It is almost inaccessible. I will keep my opinions on the targeted demographic to myself - after all, they don't know any better, they're just kids. They will hopefully learn to be contributing members of society. But the people who play Roblox for the sandbox characteristics, the ones that have the capability to contribute right now, see nothing but garbage, and look on the fourms to see if this is just a problem with the front page games.
And that is their mistake, going on the forums. The forum system is terribly out of date, and the people in the forums are either spouting nonsense or advertising their own things, with hardly any meaningful discussion going on. The new members with great ideas quickly realize this place is a trash heap on top of a great game, and quickly leave.
But let's just say a few stay. They begin working on their places, never coming into contact with each other, becuase there are no ways to get people of the same skill level together that I know of. I am sure there are some obscure groups that may do something of the sort, but how hard would it be to find those groups, much less get into them?
Their places are finished, and they wait for people to see their hard work. Nobody visits. They decide to use the forums, despite how bad it is, just so someone can see what they made, and being quality members of Roblox, they post in Look What I Made. Nobody reads their post, much less cares about their place. Maybe Roblox Talk will be more receptive? They have more traffic to that section, after all. Everybody shouts them down and ignores the content of the place.
They decide to try to integrate themselves with the forums, as that is the most obvious starting point to joining the community, and they attempt to start some discussions about Roblox. If it's not wolf cries of "alt", it is ignored, if not met with the stupidity expected from the forums.
So they decide to instead take the plunge through the filth of the front page, looking for fun places, and they try to get in touch with the people who made these places and discuss place making with them. They are likely ignored, or it takes a frustrating amount of time to get a response.
Then they slowly lose interest, having made a fine place on Roblox, but had no reason to carry on with this game, as they weren't successful in having people enjoy their place.
This is a problem. Maybe it's not as bad as I think, or maybe it is. If anyone has anything to contribute to this discussion, or ideas on how Roblox could be made better in this regard, feel free to post. I just hope Roblox gets better, becuase if it is still as bad as it is by the time my sixth year playing this game rolls around, I am going to leave. |

Part of the problem is that there is no incentive to do great, just good enough to either not get banned or get on the front page, which provides terrible quality in terms of player interaction and places.
The featured places thing is a step in the right direction, but it needs to be taken further, and into places that not many people play. And it should be the category that is displayed first, not the "relevant" category. This could drastically improve the standards of Roblox places. |

Correction: 96% of the roblox community doesn't care. After all, why should they? It's all a mess, they never see any good games being played. Or maybe they think the bad games are more fun because they're just kids and don't factor in quality as part of their "fun" values.
If better places got promoted, then that would be less of a problem. |

| Also, another aspect of the problem is having post counts. People use these to judge people. In the example given where the new players posted, if the post counts and join dates were hidden in the player's profile, the community would either not care about their post count/join date and judge that person based on the content of their post, or they would also be exposed to the theoretically good place when they look for the post count/join date. |

Another issue is that the ability to change the image that displays on the thumbnail allows for a lot of deceit to come into play - you could expect one thing from a place and get another - typically something of low quality.
Anyone have any ideas on how that could be fixed? It's a good feature, but it is being abused and it is doing quite a bit of harm to Roblox. |
