Stapling water to a tree would be hard, but not impossible. Freeze the water, make a GINORMOUS staple out of it, and stick it in a tree. Problem solved.
The mass of the frozen water will withstand the thickness of the tree and possibly go through it. You will need assistance from Chuck Norris, though.
