As we all know, tragedy sells a good video game. Add a tragic story and you automatically feel sympathetic to everyone.
My pick would have to be Arthas/The Lich King from the "Warcraft" series. He grew up a prince and a promising young paladin at that. After fighting off hordes of undead in his homeland, he tracked down the demonic dreadlord causing all of this with the intentions of stopping the undead once and for all. Long story short, he let his demonic runeblade corrupt him (he thought he could stop Mal'Ganis with it) and he became the bane of his former kingdom. After becoming a Death Knight and murdering his father and king, he destroyed his former homeland and later became the Lich King.
In short, he destroyed himself and his kingdom by trying to save it.

Cyan from FF6. His entire family and the rest of Doma Castle's inhabitants died of poisoning in the water (which was done by Kefka.)
Made even more sad when he saw the ghost of his family boarding the phantom train. |

Tragic characters don't necessarily die. They can be protagonists and antagonists alike, as long as you feel sympathy for them.

The Dwemer. Disappeared from the world. Entirely. All because of their thirst for knowledge. |

OOH! OOH! OOH! *Raises hand*
The Dwemer are a race, not a single person. I also forgot my actual choice- Godot from Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. |

His name is Slender Man, 'tards.
But I'd say Cortana. Especially since she was breaking down since the Gravemind captured her. |

Darth Revan or just Revan by far to me.
He constantly got the crap beat out of him. Even then, he was forced to turn against both the Sith and Jedi til both were out to get him. To make it worse? Jedi captured him, only for his mind to be wiped entirely. Then you have Malak who just decimates an ENTIRE planet with a vessel that you originally had (Taris, for all the folks out there) and shortly afterwards, captures you and Bastila. Keeps you in the command bridge and tortures you endlessly. After that, he confronts the Sith Emperor with Lord Scourge and the Jedi Exile. Scourge betrays Revan, and in turn kills the Jedi Exile and captures Revan for 3 centuries. After the men of the Republic free Revan from the Maelstrom Prison, they return to the Foundry. After all of that work to free him, Cipher Nine, the Bounty Hunter, the Emperor's Wrath, and Darth Nox proceed to eliminate every single thing in the Foundry. His droids, fellow Jedi, and probably the most tragic of them all, HK-47. Revan fought against the four and lost, forcing himself to force fold himself out of the Foundry.
Honestly, I don't know how you cope with THAT much happening to you. |
