Public servers are ridiculously easy as a Spy main, so it's slightly boring. It can be fun going on rampages, but honestly when no challenge is presented it's not a game. I've tried some lobbies and enjoy them, but I don't plan to make the step to any "real" competitive games, like UGC, until I have a mic.
To all of the people that play TF2 Competitive a lot, especially Spy people, do you have any advice?

Yeah, you're right, but spy is necessary in Highlander, which is honestly what I prefer over 6 v 6. That's why I want a mic, because I understand that the spy's role in comp. isn't as much to kill, but instead to relay information and perhaps kill a medic or two while you're at it. Spy has probably the least impact on HL, from what I've observed. Though I've won us the game with a medic-heavy chainstab on a medic that had charge ready. Which felt amazing. |

Spy isn't exactly the most fun class to play competitively, I mean, you don't really do much besides call out what the enemy team is doing in mumble, and you need to be aware that you're playing up against organised teams with game plans and a lot of experience, so these teams will be able to hunt you down in 5 seconds flat if you're not careful.
In my opinion 6v6 is a much better format then 9v9 highlanders, but by all means, go ahead and try out a 9v9 as spy, you might enjoy it, but keep in mind there's a HUGE difference between a pub spy and a competitive spy. |

Oh, I understand. I'm in the learning curve right now, and I almost regret my decision to main spy. I'm kind of a sado masochistic with this, because I always pick the class that's difficult with a large learning curve. Perhaps because the reward of getting skilled with it is enjoyable.
I've played HL as spy in lobbies, and I've experienced it. I'm learning that I have to be very careful as to whom I stab and when, because unless I cloak and get out immediately that will be the last person I stab before I get shot. To death. Also burned. And axed. And cut with several other sharp objects. Pretty much all the things kill me that are possible to kill me. They kill you even harder if you snatch a medic pick. EVEN HARDER if the medic had uber ready.

A spy in competetive can turn the tide of the battle with one or two backstabs
Calling out enemy positions, sentry positions and heavy+medic combo positions/if uber ready can help the team out a lot
Distracting an engineer and making a sentry nest disabled for even a second can allow your team to destroy it |

| it's also worth noting having your spy killed in order to get a medic pick or even just forcing their uber is a good tradeoff, as a spy you're not expected to do anything besides cause trouble, so I woulnt be too concerned about staying alive, as long as you cause paranoia and keep them away from the objectives. |

tf2 sucks tf1 is better ____
then by all means, start a discussion about team fortress classic, I dont think anyone here was interested in your opinion to begin with so I dont see what the point of posting it here was. We're taking about competitive TF2, not what game is better. |

The only thing that can be annoying is that the spy seems to be the scapegoat of some people if they lose. "hurr hurr if u had tooken out that nest all by urself we would've wun, failspy" But I'm actually having quite a bit of fun. I've experienced these random tide-turners before. Btw, I've heard that if you backstab an ubered person while they're in the air, they'll go flying up in the air. Not sure if this is true, anyone know?
I honestly couldn't main Medic. So much pressure. You're the backbone of your entire team, and if you do bad your team does bad. Maybe that's why the medic stands up so straight. GET IT BECAUSE BACKBONE HARHARHAR |

So, what are the medic "idols"? The main spy one, of course, is probably stabby stabby Followed by maybe Evan. And a lot of the E2 members. |

| Ha, trust me, any good, friendly team, who aren't arrogant enough to deny their flaws in teamwork will look past the mistakes you make. People shouldn't be relying on you as a spy to do anything amazing. Lobbies are usually just full of people new to the comp scene, and usually don't understand class rolls well enough to be making those judgements anyway. |
