He loves to hack, so he does.
He told me recently he got a $200 fine for hacking and had 72 hours to pay the fine.
Now he's smashing his computer for two reasons:
1. The computer was "locked", so he can't use it anyways
2. The government can track his location with it

It's probably fake since I've NEVER EVER EVER seen him hack before, but if it's real he deserved it and should have seen it coming

@Oozle

You can still do stuff on Windows

For example, Fiddler is only available for Windows.

While most hardcore "hackers" would be using Backtrack (Or at least have the offensive security repos installed on Debian/Ubuntu/etc.), Windows is still an option.

Hell, I've got a friend who probably knows more than me and uses OS X.

I thought he was lying at first
but then I looked at FBI's page saying there was a ransomware

Well, I'm gonna go text him telling him to buy a new laptop now.

Buying a new laptop isn't how to fix it.

If you want some actual info on how to remove it then I'll PM you*.

*Might have to PM you in the morning

No

But if you can remove the virus for free, why get a new laptop?

Also, I'll just post it here -

Assuming that your friend has Vista/7, type 'regedit' into the start menu search bar. On XP/8 you'll have to open the 'run' application and then type 'regedit' into it.

Give it permission to open the registry editor.

It should give you some folders with weird names in all caps.

Open up the 'HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE' hierarchy. This is normally where the virus will install itself. Look for anything suspicious in there.

Do all of this in safe mode.

*MAKE SURE THAT THE COMPUTER IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET SO THAT IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO SPREAD THE VIRUS TO OTHER COMPUTERS ON THE NETWORK AND SO THAT IT CANNOT SEND DATA TO THE VIRUS MAKER*

If this fails for some reason (the virus could just be a really good virus, which I doubt), which I doubt it will, look around the registry editor some more, but if nothing out of the ordinary is there do a system restore to the closest restore point.

If that fails, just install Ubuntu on it.

if he can't boot into windows without the lock screen thing showing up then try getting your hands on a linux live system rescue cd with a built in windows registry editor

Safemode just boots with the core parts of the OS AFAIK

It shouldn't load anything else

The real problem here would be if it loads pre-boot time. That's a pretty big problem.

At that point, here's what I would suggest.

Change the BIOS settings to boot from a disk. Have a live CD of Ubuntu ready (prepare it on another computer). Boot from it and manually go through all of the files on the hard drive and get rid of the virus that way.

AFAIK those are only for forensic work, but I don't know. Never used one.

Just using any distro to go through the hard drive should work.
