You play a grand maximum of 4 roles, the mary-sue flawless good dragon slayer, or the silent thief/assassin that would realistically be incapable of killing more than a bear but is also a dragon slayer, and the imperial/stormcloak versions of these. If you don't do something out of character chance are you'll end up being very gimped or bored, since the game has little content with actual depth and the gear you get from crafting is far beyond overpowered.

Here is why that's messed up especially for Bethesda. Take a game like Morrowind that is difficult to learn but it is satisfying when you do because you can play a HUGE amount of roles without ever being able to do everything. This adds to replayability immensely because the archmage can never become a master assassin or fighters' guild leader.

In fact now that I think about it, in some non "roleplaying" games you can play more roles than in Skyrim. In Dark Souls for example, mostly an action/adventure game that is branded as such with MORE RPG elements than Skyrim, has a lot of roleplaying that you can play since it is very open ended and doesn't tell a story for the player in the traditional fashion.

Skyrim is okay in its own merits, it's fun to explore the world in my opinion but there are no attributes or stats, just "wanna level up health stamina or magic?" and "wanna get 25% more sword damage or a 5% movement speed increase while wearing light armor?" that doesn't matter because craftable weapons eventually have thousands of damage while the level scaling enemies only have a couple hundred health at their max level.

Games like Knights of the Old Republic, for example, have 20-30 skills, attributes, and feats/traits to put points in that matter because you're only around level 20 at the end of the game due to good progression.

People say to fix Skyrim with mods. If I wanted to have a game that is only enjoyable with mods I would make my own game. If players have to fix a game that a greedy publisher is too busy swimming in money to care about then that makes both the game and company things that are ruining the game industry

Yeah, Skyrim doesn't live up to the Elder Scrolls name and doesn't really allow you to really customize a character build, more likely it's like "Follow down this skill tree and you'll become X". Skyrim also really held your hand in terms of equipment too, they made it very novice friendly.

Green, I don't care if you like the game, I liked it for about 50 hours which is when I discovered most of the world and completed all of the quests in the game except for the BS "radiant AI" repetetive "go to X location and kill Y". I'm just saying I don't consider it a roleplaying game as much as I do an action/adventure game.

skyrim is immersive BECAUSE of it's simplicity

if you think immersion is just stat screens and crap then you probably shouldn't be giving criticism
