WE WILL DISCUSS TOPICS OF GRAMMAR, USAGE, AND SPELLING.
FIRST LESSON
YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO USE COMMAS CORRECTLY.
FIRST USE: SEPARATING ITEMS IN A SEQUENCE
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU CAN USE COMMAS TO SEPARATE COMPOUND OBJECTS OR SUBJECTS IN GROUPS OF THREE OR MORE.
EX: JIMMY BOUGHT APPLES, PEARS, AND BANANAS.
SECOND USE: CONNECTING INDEPENDENT CLAUSES
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU CAN PUT TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES TOGETHER BY USING AND, BUT, FOR, NOR, YET, SO.
EX: JIMMY BOUGHT APPLES, BUT DID NOT BUY PEARS.
THE TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES ARE: "JIMMY BOUGHT APPLES" AND "JIMMY DID NOT BUY PEARS." YOU CAN CONNECT THEM USING "BUT."
EX: JIMMY DID NOT BUY APPLES, NOR PEARS.
THE TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES ARE: "JIMMY DID NOT BUY APPLES" AND "JIMMY DID NOT BUY PEARS." BECAUSE "BUY" IS ALREADY NEGATED, YOU USE "NOR," WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY THE NEGATED FORM OF "OR." (NOTE: "OR" COULD BE USED IN THIS SENTENCE, BUT THEN A COMMA WOULD NOT BE NEEDED: "JIMMY DID NOT BUY APPLES OR PEARS.")
THIRD USE: APPOSITIVE PHRASES
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU CAN BETTER DESCRIBE A SUBJECT OR OBJECT WITH AN APPOSITIVE PHRASE SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE SENTENCE BY COMMAS.
EX: JIMMY, HUNGRY AND WEAK, BOUGHT APPLES. EX: HUNGRY AND WEAK, JIMMY BOUGHT APPLES.
"HUNGRY AND WEAK" IS THE APPOSITIVE PHRASE, "JIMMY" IS THE SUBJECT.

THESE ARE ALL |=|OMOPHONES TO EACH OTHER, MEANING THEY SOUND THE SAME BUT ARE SPELLED DIFFERENTLY AND HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS
FIRST FORM: THEIR
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY USE THEIR.
USAGE: THEIR IS A WORD USED TO SHOW POSSESSION BY MULTIPLE PEOPLE, OR, IF YOU ARE A LINGUISTICS PERSON, IT IS USED TO SHOW POSSESSION IN THIRD PERSON PLURAL.
EX: THAT IS THEIR HOUSE.
"THEIR" SHOWING THAT MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE POSSESSION OF THE HOUSE.
SECOND FORM: THEY'RE
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY USE THEY'RE.
USAGE: THEY'RE IS THE CONJUNCTION OF "THEY" AND "ARE," OR, IF YOU ARE LINGUISTICS PERSON, IT IS THE CONJUNCTION OF "THEY" AND "ARE."
EX: THEY'RE FUNNY. (OR: THEY ARE FUNNY)
THIRD FORM: THERE
LESSON OVERVIEW: YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY USE THERE.
USAGE: THERE IS USED WHEN TALKING ABOUT PLACES, OR PLACES YOU ARE NOT PRESENTLY AT. (WHEN TALKING ABOUT A PLACE YOU ARE PRESENTLY AT, YOU WOULD USE "HERE")
EX: I SAID I WOULD MEET THEM THERE.
"THERE" IS A PLACE THAT YOU WOULD BE MEETING YOUR FRIENDS, THEREFOR YOU ARE NOT PRESENTLY THERE.
EX: THERE'S THE GHOST! (OR: THERE IS THE GHOST!)
"THERE'S" IS A CONJUNCTION OF "THERE" AND "IS," AND IT IS DESCRIBING WHERE THE GHOST IS.
