Rock planets get their magnetic field from hot metal cores
Gas planets get theirs from pressurized Hydrogen which gains metallic properties
Rock planets will lose their heat, metal core freezes. no magnetic field, solar wind fry the planet.
Gas planet, will lose heat, but it doesn't affect the magnetic field, we remain safe from solar winds.
One problem, how do we build a city on gas? |

| Jupiter would be a stupid place to live. Winds top 600km/h, the average surface temperature is -108 C compared to Earth's average 15 C, a day is ten hours, the gravity is 2.5 stronger than that of Earth's, it's made of gas, and don't forget the "Great Red Spot" storm. |

| Don't forget the Great Red Spot. About 10x the size of Earth, if I remember right. Nasty hurricane. |

| The Big Red Spot is nothing compared to the size of Jupiter, we can easily avoid it.. |

Dan, we wouldn't be able to avoid it because it's fully sentient and once it knows we're invading it's homeland it'll come after us ok?

Besides, Jupiter's inhabitants would gather and start a riot anyways.

Living in the gravity of jupiter wouldn't be too hard. Or on the surface of it's atmosphere, but the condition and storms and such as so extreme we are a long time away from figuring out how to live there.
It would be easy to float colonies over Jupiter with ballons. There is a spot in Venus's atmosphere where the conditions are like Earth and the only thing we would have to put up with is the acid rain. Water wouldn't be a problem because you could create it with some of the elements that are in Venus's atmosphere I believe. |

Except, if any of us fell or "got pushed", we would die the second we leave that atmosphere, because it' covered in clouds of poisonous gas. Even if you survive you the poison, Venus is a volcanic power house. |
