In a revolutionary way, then Goldeneye for the N64
If for a game that's not in the crowd, Half-life. |

You gotta admit, some of Goldeneye's glitches were funny. |

| Too glitch-y, actually. Not one time have I ever completed it without having to reset it because of a glitch. |

How is Goldeneye more revolutionary than Half-Life?
Goldeneye just happened to be the first console shooter that was not completely broken and was decent. Sure, it did a few new things, but it was nowhere near as revolutionary as Half-Life. It also aged poorly.
Half-Life INVENTED the Modern Shooter. You know all those scripted "Cinematic" scenes, linear corridors, ammo everywhere, and realistic NPCs? Half-Life was responsible for that. Half-Life also showed that a small indie company can produce higher quality games than a massive AAA company. 4 player split screen only on Goldeneye? Half-Life had 6-player internet multiplayer, which has a competitive scene even today. Even more famous are the mods for Half-Life, most importantly Counter-Strike, which still has over 50000 consecutive players today. And Half-Life has aged VERY well aside from graphics.
What else did Goldeneye do? |

@jason
Half Life introduced several new concepts to FPS gaming, before, it was just find the keycard and then find the exit, while there are several good games that used this concept and it worked perfectly fine to them. (Doom 1, Doom 64, Duke Nukem 3D, and Quake 1) Most new FPS games didn't really try going over the bar, there were some like Goldeneye, but for something like Goldeneye, the campaign was bland, there was no variety in enemies. Some maps were just meh etc. Overall, it had a pretty decent concept, but Goldeneye executed it poorly as with a lot of movie games do. Until Half Life came. Half Life did several things to reinvent the FPS genre, it was the first FPS game with a good executed story in terms of progression, had challenging AI for the HECU, before, it was just imps shooting lava balls at you, or troops from Goldeneye rolling around aimlessly, but Half Life did it right with the HECU, they retreated when you fired at them, and occasionally there would be a scripted event where they would pull some kind of tactic on you, enemy placement in the game for the HECU was clever too. There are several other things Half Life put into the FPS genre but I don't feel like typing anymore. Just my opinion. |

Also, Half-Life had a ton of detail.
The roaches on the floor would run towards corpses and eat it, get startled from a light suddenly turning on, run away from loud sounds, and do other stuff. That is just a tiny detail.

"more pew pew = more fun"
lol
so you're telling me that making a square in Doom 1 editor and felling it with BFG 9000's and Cyberdemons, then destroying them all is more fun than say Call of duty 4's campaign or any one of those new games? |

@overrwatcher
Goldeneye was one of the early games where you did more damage to enemies if you aimed at specific body parts.
If also introduced reloading, which only appeared in arcade shooters like Time Crisis, to consoles |

@over
Wasn't Half Life 1 the first FPS where you had to use the actual environment to kill some of your enemies because they were too tough for your regular weapons? There might be a few FPS games that did that before but idk them.
also I think it was also the first FPS game to make something completely fictional like a Doom 1 Style story come true with it's story progression and how most supplies were put in logical places.
I can see why people like Goldeneye better though, I remember having fun with my older brother throwing mines at each other, but I never really had that much fun with the campaign. :/ |

Ok, your first statement was good, but in the second, I recall you reloading your shotguns in doom 1 and 2. |

"Before this, storytelling in games was either in Quake Town or the Metal Gear Solid district: An occasional text scroll between murder parades to check that you haven't run off to burn down your school yet, or holding you down and barfing on your face until you drown. But Half-Life showed that you can have a deep narrative without sacrificing gameplay"

"When the soldiers you thought were the rescue team start executing scientists it would only hurt the game if it faded into a cutscene and showed Gordon Freeman shaking his little bearded fists in rage".

DOOM was far more revolutionary than Half-Life and Goldeneye combined. That's for sure.
DOOM is what made PC gaming popular. Like how HALO was THE reason to get an Xbox, DOOM was THE reason to get a PC back then.
