My name is SirSavary and I have recently returned to Roblox because why the hell not. I have spent the last 2 years expanding my knowledge of computer science. In that time I made a few games and started an online community. Before I left however, I worked on an RPG. I don't think Roblox has ever had a decent RPG. Everything seems to consist of "level doors" and boss teleporters right next to spawn. That's not an RPG, that's a free modeled cake walk.
Anyhow, I plan to finish my RPG and then leave again but I am not sure if I am thinking outside the box enough. My philosohpy was to just keep going until my ideas became completely ridiculous, but sadly I do not have the time to do that on Roblox. Below is a list of thinks I am adding, most of them have already been created.
1) Bosses that are more than just bigger versions of other monsters Something that always made me disappointed (with Roblox RPGs) was the bosses. "Level 9001 Grass King Mega Giant 3.0". No, no one wants that. The community wants bosses with special attacks and their own arena, that are of an unspeakable difficulty and provide a legendary reward, right?
2) Emergent gameplay and a more realistic feel. I won't touch to much on this one because it's so massive, but little things like shooting a flame thrower orc's fuel tanks makes him explode (already implemented) or elemental attacks (ice blade freezes someone solid, fire blade sets them on fire)
3) Everything responds the way you would expect it too. Another thing that got to me about other RPG's was a lack of predictability (opposite number 2). FOr example, after you kill a monster, it can still kill you. Is it an acid monster? No. It is a level 8999 Grass Monster. Grass doesn't hurt you when it's dead. Worst part is, it's one line of code to fix that.
I was planning on writing more but I have to get up for work tomorrow. Tell me what you guys things, all input is highly appreciated (Ideas, concepts, things you see in RPG's that you do/don't like, etc). I'm thinking of running a personal server every now and then so that some of you can help me beta test it. With the Bindable Functions, making an in game debugger has never been easier.
Regards, Sir Savary |

Before you ask for help/be a part of, you need to able showcase what you have so far. If not, this is actually a rant, which people won't bother replying to.

| Scratch that, I have an hour, I'll just upload it now. I hope a small town and a little forest will be acceptable (plus some of the creatures and weapons and various little things). |

My concept of RPG and ROBLOX just don't fit together.
I would help, but I know anything I work on as a group crashes and burns after looking cool enough for people to spam me to continue working on it.
That's what happens when concepts + ROBLOX appear, you get stuck on localized lighting and localized parts and realize ROBLOX hates fancy stuff like that. |

| Yeah, groups and roblox never work out. Sharing code is just about impossible, and sharing anything else leaves it open to the public. I'm not trying to make something that has state of the art graphics, I'm trying to make something that is fun and full of content. I played an RPG earlier today with level door after level door, and I mean, yeah, it's content, but it's not real content. If I wanted that I would just do some fetch quests in Mass Effect. |

I have .... issues... with making RPG's, mostly with creating too much content (Or trying to devise a system to do so. ) From that point, I worry about efficiency, and then I want it to look nice, so I do pseudo elements.
Trust me, just stick with nice simple classical RPG thing's on ROBLOX, and you don't have to deal with the sucky prospects of pseudo environments...
But yeah, good luck. |

| Well, I've been spending some time working on a base model NPC. Then if all goes well, I should be able to make a plugin to configure it, After that, it's just copy and paste. New name, new color, new special attacks, health and level. The real challenge is going to be quests, and balancing. And thank you. |

"The 'best' is opinionated"
To be fair, the bar isn't very high. Anything well put together on the level of flash game portal site content would be easily better than anything out there right now. |

The problem with these projects is that it's not a real development team. In a real team, there are jobs like producers, directors, artists, programmers, and designers. However, often these projects only have builders, scripters, and leaders. Soon after beginning, these projects fails. Usually, an aid in organization comes from the management jobs (director, producer) having some sort of investment in the project, and they hope to see a return on that investment. Consider organization when starting a group project.
I am actually considering making a contribution to your idea. It seems worth my time. |

| I don't want this to be a group project. I already have a team outside of Roblox, I will not be forming a new one. Scripters is where most of the Roblox elite hang out. We've seen more games come and go than anyone else. I want your opinions, that's all. In return, free sword or something. And maybe, just maybe, I'll put you in the credits when my next real game comes out. |

Alright, it's up. Sorry it took so long, Torch Orcs were being a hassle.
Map is pretty bare, but I will work on adding everything I work on to it. Think of it as a nightly build sort of thing. I don't want to keep it public, so if you want to help test it, post here or PM me. I'm going to be on for a few minutes, then I'm off to bed. Thanks for all the input so far guys! |

"Legend of the Shattered Rune RPG" -Blob34
That's a decent RPG game, he is making a second one right now. He probably could have done better and added more content, but the use of Terrain makes it more efficient.
I have my own ideas for a better type of RPG, and some of them are similar to yours with the attacks, but not exact. (Actual attacks, instead of shoot this or swing that at an enemy that just charges you). Perhaps my making of a tower defense game, or at least experimenting with the concept, will help with creating enemy attacks.
Anyway, the worst part about RPGs on ROBLOX is the high level of grinding. That's all it is basically. They lack a story line, everything is static, and you're stuck killing enemies with nothing new.
ROBLOX said that they will be expanding our brick limit to 200k or 700k, somewhere in there. If that happens, and the universe idea is implemented, then you will have room for millions of bricks, (if you're BC at least). Either way, Quenty's issue won't be a problem anymore. Sure, you should stay efficient, but you'll have more freedom.
You might want to look into that, they only mentioned it in a single sentence on the blog some time ago.

| Now see, I always thought that RPGs had to be driven by story. If you tell a good story, then typically the system doesn't matter as much, and the content practically creates itself (more facets to an ongoing story). Warnin', this game is old, I made it in '10. The inventory doesn't work, but if you have a good memory you don't really need it. The combat system is super lame but the RPG is mostly based on story, as I said before. Also, I used local bricks a lot in it (which is apparently not good practice). And yes, it is sci-fi. Because sci-fi RPGs are less cliche than medieval ones. Just sayin'. |

@stravant
Yes, but maybe some people might prefer a specific gameplay element that is not present in this game, or may prefer another game over this. Surely, I've seen many, and I DO mean MANY over-ambitious projects like this over at Game Design... with almost half of them being 'I'm making ROBLOX's best RPG!'. I'm pretty sure that a few well-built RPGs are currently unknown.

@FellWarrior I know it would, but I feel more at home in Scripters. @SN0X I thought my grammar was pretty decent. @apdapreturns Maybe when I'm done. I like open source, I might even release a few of my scripts early. @8SunTzu8 The grinding is what I was getting at with the level doors. I remember this one RPG, way, way back, that had a very basic quest system. You could go out and collect things for this guy, and you got gold/XP in return. It was a nice change from the constant slaughtering on monsters, As for the attacks, not many of my NPC's are going to just charge at you. I've already written the code for punching/kicking and sill start adding that soon. @Davidii I've already written the main quest, I can't just do nothing but monsters and fancy weapons ;) @Vocalise I don't actually have anything to say, but I figured I'd quote you anyways. |

For a long time, I've wanted to make a legit Zelda-style RPG on ROBLOX (it could definitely at least look pro. in offline mode). And I agree that those suggestions are areas for improvement-- in general, the battle mechanics especially (enemy AI, attack patterns, weapons, how damage is dealt, how health/mana/energy/xp/gold/crafting works) all have some gameplay issues in most ROBLOX RPG's.
However, it takes a good deal of work to craft those to have more depth-- you really have to design everything from the ground-up. For a demo of some more complicated enemy types, I have a utube video of some of the enemies I've created (TheHotThoth), and will be making more enemy types shortly. Maybe this will give some ideas?

@HotThoth; I've created more epic boss battles - not necessarily by making the enemies varied, but more of a challenge. Basically, it's like mini-cutscenes, which I think is innovative in ROBLOX. Hey, free idea. Go take it.
Also, the in-depth elements of RPGs in ROBLOX are solely managed and developed by the developers - How in-depth the game can go is only limited to the amount of imagination the developer has.
It doesn't really take a good deal of work - many people simply create "engines" or working environments, to be able to add lots of items / quests / etc. in a relatively short time. For example, you can have an inventory engine in where you can load every possible item - which would be a bunch of stringvalues with several other values contained inside it, containing damage information, and description / picture.

Boss battles eh? I've been wanting to make some more... had some ideas for how to get more complex animations to work ok in online mode too :). But haven't really polished any yet. You have linx for yours?
