The inside of the pyramid was made of heavy, gray stone blocks. It was cold and damp inside, and it had the constant feeling of being trapped, even though the exit wasn't that far away.
The small crew of archaeologists were excavating the pyramid of the Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Turk. It was November 20th, 1937. The excavation wasn't supposed to take very long, and their findings were to be taken back to the British Museum.
Archaeologist Charles Hunt ran into the small stone room where the temporary research center was set up.
"I'm through!" he yelled to Sara his fiancee, and the other scientists. Willard, one of them, stood up and walked over to him.
"Well, let's have a look!" he said.
Sara walked up to Charles too. "Oh, I can't believe it. After all this time..."
The mood was full of cheer as Willard, Charles, Sara, and Polanski walked briskly down the hieroglyph-carved passageway to the tomb. The other scientists were staying back for now, and were told to prepare the journals. The four of them stopped at the entrance to the tomb. A large wall of stone packed together had been moved out of the way, and revealed was a room with gold-painted walls and a sarcophagus standing up against the back wall.

Sara stared at the finely-carved face on the front of the mummy case. She thought it was beautiful.
After a few moments, the mummy case was opened. Inside stood the tall mummy of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Turkminloto. His hands were in an X across his chest, and his head was slightly uncovered.
"It's fascinating how he isn't a skeleton," Willard said, examining the figure from top to bottom.
"It really is," said Charles.
"What is that, that object he's holding?" asked Sara, pointing. Carefully placed in the mummy's left hand was a scroll. "I wonder what it reads," Polanski said. "I could translate it."
"The British Museum will be happy with all these treasures," said Charles, looking around the room. There was a golden dog statue, two statues of Egyptian soldiers, and a stone tablet with hieroglyphs painted on it.
"We should wait on the mummy for now." |

It was already evening, and the atmosphere inside the pyramid was quiet. The other scientists were documenting the newly-found treasures, and Charles was preparing to open the mummy's sarcophagus.
Willard was the only one in the research center. Everyone else had trudged out of the pyramid to get supplies. He was closely studying the scroll they had found in the tomb, softly reading the Egyptian words to himself (Polanski had happily translated them, but Willard barely remembered what he had said, so he just pronounced the words as he saw them). Then, he heard Charles come back.
"Charles, I need to ask you, did you find any canopic jars in the tomb?" He called out into the passageway. He heard his footsteps scratching across the sandy floor.
"Charles?"
Charles, Sara, Polanski, and Donald the egyptologist were walking back to the research center when they heard a loud scream. They quickly picked up their pace and ran down the passage. When they finally reached the room, they saw Willard on the floor. He had small cuts on his face, and he almost couldn't breathe. They also noticed the scroll missing.
"Summon the nurse," ordered Charles, and Donald ran off.

The nurse could barely help Willard. His wounds were cleaned, but he was still in shock.
"What exactly did the scroll say?" asked Sara.
"I copied most of the important information down. In English, too. We'll be able to read it," said Polanski.
Charles was checking the tomb to see if anything strange had happened in there. He was already on edge because of the theft of the ancient scroll. Sara came in to help. She saw him pacing around. He looked extremely distressed.
"What is it now?" asked Sara.
"The mummy's missing!" Charles shouted. He pointed at the sarcophagus. The cover was on the floor, and the casket was empty.
The other scientists ran in.
"We apparently have a thief on our hands," Donald said. "We'll have to contact the police at once." Sara frowned. The lights from the torches flickered.
"What're we supposed to do now? Say that he steals another relic. What're we gonna do then, hm?" Charles said rhetorically.

The crew decided that they were going to get the police to investigate. Charles and Sara were going alone.
They walked down the passageway to the pyramid entrance, but noticed something strange. A wall now stood where a passage was before.
"This is a dead end?" Sara asked.
"No, not that I remember. The entrance was right here."
Sara gasped. A loud thump had startled her. She and Charles turned around, and saw a large stone door slowly sliding down from the ceiling, closing off the passage they had come from.
"What gives?" yelled Charles, as he pounded on the door. They were both trapped in a square area. The torch flickered.
"This could be a trap," Sara said, frowning at the ceiling. "They're everywhere in these pyramids."
"There must be some way out of this mess," Charles said. He kept calm, but Sara was trying hard not to panic. |

The rest of the crew waited in the research area, when Donald heard footfalls from outside in the passageway.
"That must be Charles and Sara," he said, grabbing a torch. He trudged out, closing the green tarp that covered the entrance to the research area, and made sure that he didn't get lost as he walked deeper into the pyramid. He heard the footsteps slowly trudge down the passage. They were getting closer, about to come around the corner in front of him.
"Charles, hello. Willard is still in shock, but he's recovering," Donald said, walking to the corner. When he turned around he was shocked to see that the mummy of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Turk was very much alive and coming straight towards him.
"Ohh...," he managed to say. His nerves were going to be the death of him if the mummy wasn't.
The mummy lunged at him, so he picked up some medium sized rocks from the ground and threw them at the approaching assailant. The mummy managed to dodge all of them. Donald decided to burn the mummy with his torch, but all he could do was wave it in his face, because the mummy grabbed his hand and twisted it, making the torch fall out. It hit the sandy floor, and caused a cluster of the small grains to burn.
Donald was lifted up, and thrown on the ground. He managed to come back to his senses and skitter away, with the mummy following behind him.
He ran into the research area creating a loud commotion, startling the nurse and Willard.
"The mummy is alive!" He screamed.
Suddenly, the hulking, wrapped-up figure shoved its way through the crumbling stone wall. The nurse screamed a shrill scream and began digging through her bag for something to attack him with.
He gave Donald a blow across the face, and Donald fell against the sand barely moving. The nurse came at the mummy with a scalpel, and dug it into his shoulder. The sharp tool made a small thud as it dug in. The mummy grabbed her neck, and forcefully shoved her back into the tent set used as the sleeping quarters. The stick holding it up snapped, and the tarp collapsed on top of her. Willard began screaming again as the mummy attacked him a second time. He made a B-Line for the side of the room, grabbed the nurse's hand, and they both took off into the passage. |

Charles and Sara had managed to escape. After digging about on the floor, John had found a strange button that made the door give way when he pressed it.
Now, they were walking down the passageway to the research center, about to give the news that they couldn't find the way out. The crew had managed to draw a map of the pyramid, and so they anticipated that it would help them. They were both startled when they bumped into Willard and the nurse.
"Willard, aren't you ill?" Charles asked.
"No, no time for that. Listen, something very horrible is going on around here. I have no idea what..."
The nurse was frowning. Charles noticed the scalpel in her shaky hand. He was about to comment on that when he heard the echo of loud footsteps.
"This way!" Willard yelled. He started running in the direction of the research center, but instead ducked off into a passageway that came off of that one. Sara looked back, and caught a glimpse of a person following them. She was shocked to see that it was the mummy. It gave another grunt and continued its chase of the two women and two men.
"What happened?!" She cried.
"It just came at us," the nurse explained.
"It's the thing that attacked me," said Willard. "It stole the scroll."
"Hurry, this way!" said Charles, holding on to the torch. He led the group down another passage. Nobody knew where they were going. They didn't really mind, because they just wanted to escape.
They came to a large stone door. The color of the wall was different here. It was fancier. Gold-painted, like the tomb. Willard gasped.
"What is it?"
"I've read about this," He said excitedly. "While I was resting from the attack. It was something Polanski translated from the scroll when we first found it. It was a riddle, and it goes with this! It read:
'The exit should not remain unknown
You must notice it
For it is framed with gold stone'"
"Let's go in!" yelled the nurse.
The four ducked inside and slammed the door shut behind them.

The room they were in was huge. Even though the ceiling was high, the width wasn't that big, but the length was pretty long. On the other side of the room was a black door.
"That must be the way out," said Sara.
"I'll go first," said Charles. He leisurely stepped forward and then felt his foot step on something. He looked under his foot, and realized he had stepped on a button. Then, he heard a loud cracking from overhead. Sara ran in and pulled him out of the way, just as a humongous boulder fell straight down on the spot he was standing on.
"It was another trap," He said still in shock. "Now how are we supposed to get out?" Willard said.
"If only we had the scroll."
Suddenly, the mummy burst through the door they had just came through. Sara screamed as he lunged at her. He scooped her up, and carried her back into the passageways of the pyramid.
"We need to go after her," said Willard.
The mummy kicked a section of the wall, and it slowly gave way. Sara was surprised. It was a quick shortcut to his tomb.
"Put me down, please," she said calmly.
The mummy looked at her. He set her on the ground.
"What are you doing this for?" she asked him. To her surprise, he replied in a full sentence.
"I want to live with you," he said. Sara could tell where this was going.
-"Why?"
"Because my time was full of terrors. War and disease. I want to see the world again, and see if things have gotten better," he replied.
-"Why didn't you just leave your tomb?"
"Because there so many evil people in the world. I only want you. The others wouldn't accept me. One of you tried to cause me death."
"You've been up all this time? All these centuries?" asked Sara.
"No. I've only been back few times. Words from the scroll cause it."
"I'm sorry, Turkminloto. It can't happen. But that doesn't mean you go around, causing harm to others. Then you will be contributing to the bad in the world." Sara explained.
-"So, I must rest some more?"
"I'm afraid so. Don't worry, you'll be taken care of soon enough."
Turk stared at her for a few moments, and then he stuck out his hand.
"Take scroll. You need it to escape. It has last part of directions."
"Thank you," said Sara.
"No, I should be saying that to you. You have relieved me of a large amount of pain. Now please go."
With that, Turkminloto climbed into his sarcophagus and laid down. He slowly crossed his hands over his chest, and closed his eyes. Sara noticed that he had stopped breathing. He laid literally as still as a stone.
She waved goodbye as she walked out of his tomb holding the scroll.

She bumped in to Charles in the passage back to the boulder room.
"What did he do to you?" he asked.
"He gave me the scroll. It has the answer on how to escape."
According to the scroll, they placed it in a small gap in the wall inside the large room. After a few moments, the door on the other side slid open.
"Come on," said Charles, as the nurse and Willard ran into the area beyond the door. It was nearly pitch black, but it was the way to go. Sara was thinking about her encounter with the mummy. Then, she followed Charles in. The door slid shut behind them, and it was extremely dark. They still had the torch.
"Now what?" asked Willard.
They all just wandered around. The walls were different in here. They were like a cave's walls, with stalagmites here and there.
Suddenly, the floor right under their feet gave way. They all plunged down, screaming, into the current of a rushing underground river. It whisked them through the huge cave, twisting and turning. Sara watched beautifully colored rocks go by as she laid back and let the current pull her. It was strangely relaxing. The water was a crystal blue. They kept speeding down through the cave. Wherever they were going, it was far away. The crew tumbled over a small waterfall, and fell down into another current. Charles noticed they were heading straight for the wall.
He bobbed up and down in the stream. His head went under the water's surface for a few moments, and he could see a large opening, big enough for a person to get through.
"Everyone swim down through the opening!" he instructed. Everyone ducked underwater, swam through, and then kicked back to the surface. Moonlight shone down upon them. It felt like such a relief to be breathing air from the outside world. They were in the Nile River.
Charles and Sara sat on the bank. Willard helped the nurse out.
"We'd better get to the jeep," he said. "It's a long way back to Cairo."
Sara looked back at the pyramid. It was far away from where they were now. She remembered the pharaoh's wish and felt sad, but then remembered that it was probably for the best. |
