The "pixelated retro 8-bit" indie gimmick that's getting really popular right now is getting old
It's all right if you use it because your team doesn't have the dosh to invest in higher graphics, but don't tote it around as if it were a tribute to the 90s
On the side of that, I'm just about to finish playing Bastion for the fourth run in a row and it still hasn't gotten old |

I agree. 8 bit makes the game look awful. Do I get ANY nostalgia off of it? Not one percent. Does any sane person care about the NES any more? Not really.
As you said, it's understandable if the devs don't have a lot of money, but most of the time they have more than enough money to get an actually decent artstyle.

Minecraft is a really big offender at the 'retro' style (Or maybe that's the fans talking, I'm not sure)
I don't have any problem with it unless you're going to say that your graphics are better than a modern game's because it sucks up to the grandfather consoles
If you're doing that, you're passing off retro graphics to sugar coat bad graphics. Someone's going to parrot that games like Mario 64 had lame graphics but were still remembered as classics. Here's the thing; The games you remembered as classics back then all had beautiful graphics and you remember them as beautiful because they all tried the best they could to push the hardware of their time. They made full advantage of the platforms they were made for. And there were ugly games, but Sturgeon's Law doesn't just apply for video games and the 'gem in the sea of garbage' concept doesn't just apply for video games in the present day
Sure, this might not apply as much for the early 3D games - But if you look at the classics in the early days that nobody tried to just slap textures on to blocks and called it a day. They always tried to make to with the tools and the limitations they were given. Retro style games today don't try to do that.
It's not all bad, though - Sword and Sworcery's pixel art has a great consistent style that isn't a pain in the eye |

My favorite indie game so far has to be Path of Exile despite it being in CBT at the moment.
Also, anyone planning to get Starbound? |

Ah yes, EYE. The strangest game I have ever played. That was a very fun 18 hours.
I was a hacker who used an assault rifle for 3/4 of the game, and for the last 1/4 I used a chaingun.

Now that the winter sale has started, let's discuss about indie games we should pick up.
GET AUDIOSURF NOW. WHY DON'T YOU OWN IT ALREADY?
DEFCON is the most tense nuclear war simulator I have ever played. Alliances will be formed, backstabs will ensue, nukes fly, millions die. This is only if you have friends though.
Dungeons of Dredmor is only $1.24 right now, but it has enough content and fun to justify AT LEAST a $10
Faerie Solitare sounds like a really bad shovelware game, but it's actually really good.
People praise Natural Selection 2 nonstop, so it should be worth checking out. It has had a VERY long development time, that's all I know.
And about the Super Mega Indie Pack, I can't help but feel that it's a bit too varied. Almost everything is thrown in, from barely interactive walks like Dear Esther to very deep and complex games like SPAZ, Krater, and Tower Wars.

"multi-billion"
Hell no.
The only multi-billion gaming companies I know of are Activision-Blizzard, EA, Valve (running the largest PC game store brings in a ton of profit), etc.

bump
Now that the Steam Winter Sale is over, what indie games did you all get?
I got:
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - Love it. Chrome - This is technically not indie (just REALLY low budget), but holy crap this game is difficult. A few shots kill you, but you have a bunch of tools to outsmart the AI. Natural Selection II - I also love it. Nuclear Dawn - Tiny community (only one full server), but it's a great game. Symphony - Despite it having very little affected by your music, it's a ton of fun.
