Yeah, but the transparent effect doesn't really fade them, it just makes the entire thing transparent.

Their are many ways to do it.
One could simply use a brush and erase part of the image.
Or you can make a complicated blend of layer styles...

| u just insert a character as a new layer and change the layer properties (i.e. opacity, which is transparency) |
