By this you mean freedom to report on anything you please?
I have a love/hate(Excuse the cliche...) with it. I like the fact we are, at least in theory, able to report on whatever we see fit, however, it often drips down to a for-profit gossip string, rather than journalism.
Note I said in theory, because in practice, despite our so-called "freedoms", our government often decides they don't like a story and purges it. |

@9prind:
No, not exactly. They can't simply barge into your office and steal the tapes or what not, but they can be quite persuasive in their argument against your release of a story. |

They are the law...
Censorship is everywhere. It's an inescapable fact of central control in societies. I'm not saying it's all bad, but I am saying we shouldn't deny that it exists. |

well i havent really heard of any goverment censorship at all......i mean news stations talk about how bad the govermnet is all the time. they also dont take down blogs or really anything online. like if it were to come out that they were actively bullying people into censorship then it would be a big deal... |

| they also arent the law. the goverment of the united states doesnt have unlimited power. it doesnt have the power to censor people it also doenst have the power to just change crap willy nilly. you know what the law is? THE LAW! the law isnt the people who enforce it. they also cant prosecute someone for releasing an article they dint like beause they would win in court. |

Ideally, yes. But that's not the way it works in reality, because the system would fall into anarchy.
And they can prosecute you for releasing things they don't like. See the Assange guy from last year. I could honestly care less about the guy, and now he's just being a pest, but he had the right according to US law to release the items he released. |

He is being a pest. Did he really need to rear his head at the UNGA? No, not really, there were far more pressing matters. |

| well everything he is doing is for more goverment transparancy and thats something i agree with. his site has leaked many important documents that the public should be able to see. it has also leaked videos of nato soldiers killing civilians. im for the war but that stuff should be released. |
