| I prefer they take their time to make a great console than pump out as many as they can. |

>in a few years, the only gaming options will be Wii U and PC, because Microsoft and Sony refuse to release new systems.
Nah, they'll keep making consoles until someone comes along with some amazing invention that blows both out of the water. |

>Well, y'see, I assume PS3 has at best until 2013-14 Christmas. Between 2014 and 2018 or whatever we'll only have two options that're not 100% d34d.
They're aiming to release the PS4 from between 2014 - 2015. |

The good thing about PS3 is that it's powerful than most computers that cost the same.

"Steam should stick to something they know best.
PC gaming."
Except that's basically what a Steam Box is. It's said to be a console-sized PC that will be upgradable, presumably intended to use Steam's big-picture mode. |

Let me hit you up with some info I found:
"The Problem With Building A PC-Console Hybrid
There are a number of obstacles in the way of a hypothetical Steam Box.
For one thing, to target the console market the Steam Box would need to run much cheaper than high-end gaming consoles. The X51 starts at $699 – double the price-tag of either the Xbox 360 or PS3. It tops off at over $1200.
A Steam Box would need to integrate mouse and keyboard. Many – if not most – PC gamers find the mouse and keyboard configuration much better than any console controller – for first-person-shooters and MMORPGs like World of Warcraft especially.
And aside from piracy, which Steam does a good job at countering, actually, the real bane of PC gaming for developers is the lack of a uniform spec-sheet. In a sense, coming out with a baseline PC “console” could help take care of this. Game developers could build games based on the Steam Box specs and gamers could rely on games to run as reliably as they do on any other console.
Of course, PC gamers are tinkerers and modders, so to really appeal to that market, the Steam Box would need to be modifiable. Users would need to be able to pop in a new CPU, a new graphics card, more RAM – and pretty soon we’ve got just another PC with all the incumbent difficulties – and benefits – of PC gaming." |

This is quite a tricky situation that I have no solution to, but I am sure Valve is thinking about. On a side note, the only reason the Xbox and PS3 are so cheap is because they use hardware from 6 years ago.

This makes no sense. Of course M&KB would be incorporated, as it's simply a PC, but it would mainly be used for a controller as it's target audience is console gamers. No reason what-so-ever to *need* to include it.

I don't see what's so incumbent about being able to upgrade, but alright.

It looks like they're trying to join both console players and PC players under one roof, which is a horrible idea as both hate each other.
Second, if it's basically going to be PC gaming, why bother making it in the first place? And why go for console players?
Thirdly, it's Valve. They're not the sharpest tools in the box. They need to understand console gamers, which is difficult considering that Gabe hates consoles with a passion. |
