Yes, adding materials to bricks may increase lag on slower systems.
You'll still get lag if you have a ton of parts, however.

| Of course. I turn off my material setting. Removes a ton of lag. Also clothing also causes a lot of lag as well. |

And any surface-connectors such as studs, welds, inlets, etc.
If you really want to decrease lag: plastic, smooth, anchored and grouped into chunks. |
