| I'm pretty sure these occur often and don't really mess anything up, there have been huge solar flares and nothing happened |

Nah. Power and stuff goes out for a little while due to the fact that Earth's atmosphere can't deflect all the effects of a solar flare. Solar wind however happens all the time and the Earth's atmosphere has no problem deflecting it. |
