The EIHL Cardiff Devils and the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have used their shared Welsh Heritage to link the two clubs.
On 1st March 2013 the Penguins will host a Welsh heritage evening, celebrating the rich history of the Welsh steel and coal workers that settled in Pennsylvania during the 18 and 1900’s.
And the Devils will be a part of those celebrations, with footage of the Club, our Red Army fans and our beautiful City featuring in unique video presentations by the Penguins’ creative department
How did this come about? Very simply. Two members of the Red Army, aware of the decision of the AHL club to celebrate the Welsh contribution to the history of its environment, began talking about how great it would be to get involved. Geraint Walters dug out the email addresses for the AHL management and sent them over to Paul Sullivan, who contacted the Penguins right away.
‘Geraint and I had been chatting about how great it was to see the Penguins hosting this night’ says Sullivan, ‘and we talked about reaching out to them to try and get involved.’
It proved simpler than either man thought.
‘Geraint sent me some email addresses and I offered any video assistance they might want to help them celebrate the Welsh roots in their area’ continues the Devils’ announcer and Director of Nutshell, who provide all match night video content for the Devils.
‘I was delighted to see that within 24 hours Brian Coe (Vice President of Operations for the AHL franchise) had emailed me back and said how thrilled they would be to have us help them out.’
The email from Coe was decidedly enthusiastic, as he said:
‘We would absolutely love to have some footage of the team, the arena and fans, as well as any local landmarks we could work into the night. I think that would add tremendously to our event. ‘
‘I got back to him right away, after telling Geraint about the response’ says Sullivan, ‘and it was thrilling to see the reaction from the Penguins over this game.’
Mr Coe continued:
‘By all means, feel free to spread the word about our link.
Once we get closer to the game, we would like to do a story for our website and game program about the Devils history. I think that's something our fans would really enjoy. ‘
The Clubs already had a link as Chris Blight played once for the Penguins and Devin Didiomete (pictured) iced on two occasions for the Pennsylvania outfit.
The teams will also aim to initiate Jersey swaps, so that both clubs can raise money from the raffle or auction of jerseys. All monies will go to local charities.
This tie-in shows jut how small the hockey world can be, and The Cardiff Devils are thrilled to be a part of a celebration of the rich cultural influence our country has had on the area surrounding the WBS Penguins. |
