I posted in GD after seeing Sorcus reply. Read both Sorcus' response and my couple posts. I think I provided a good argument and would like to see some of the other's scripters thoughts on this same topic.
Post comments on this thread for the sake of keeping all the scripters to one thread and not intermingled with GD.. |

roblox is a social game... i think it would be really cool for younger people to be able to use templates to customize their place, and say to their friends, "come to my place! it's really cool and it has rockets!"
now, of course, this doesn't promote the genius of highly-advanced places such as catalog heaven, but it does add something to roblox.

@doombringer
And that's where my issue is. Roblox has unintentionally (I hope...) moved away from a game creator/sharer into a social hangout with some building thrown in. I don't like where they've moved scripting to with their implied priorities... |

As much as people whine about people not being good scripters, the thing Roblox really needs is good quality in building and level design.
This guarantees that more games will be playable, meaning people who aren't good at using the tools Roblox gives can focus on making better places--experiences.
TF2 has what, 7 game modes? which function identically to each other. It works fine, because there's multiple (at least three? I'm thinking CTF here) maps with it. Roblox will provides hundreds or thousands of maps. And since all of the CTF part of it works, you'll actually be able to appreciate the peoples' game designs. |

the truth of the matter is that older, more matured users like us are not roblox's target audience--the younguns are. i believe most of us use roblox because of its creative potential, which is certainly an aspect of roblox that is just as (if not more) remarkable as its social environment.

@BlueTaslem
This is a good point. But they don't feel like different, quality experiences because they all have the same style and will all have the same structure. The only differences that can be seen are different "obstacles", something which isn't unique to the character of a game. I, personally, certainly would not be entertained just playing 10 different versions of this map and I don't see how others can see any difference either. It all *looks* the same. |

but the cool thing about tf2 is that you can host your own servers to play with your buddies on LAN or something. that's why we love it :D

The easiest thing I can compare this two is TF2/CS but with user made maps.
Yes, every CTF round has the same mechanics, but the map is different.
Templates will guarantee a much better flow of places. The community will jump at maps that are different, those will make it to the front page. Roblox might even add sub-categories (FPS --> CTF). Scripting Helpers will have less topics about how to make CTFs (or other places based on future templates) and more topics about how to add/remove/change X in the CTF template. We will still have unique places, but no longer will the bar be a place that is thrown together and poorly scripted because everyone now has a baseline to build off of. |

I kind of addressed this by saying that Roblox should push learning how to script.. Because they don't at all. That was the whole content of my post... How they're moving away from learning to be able to create and towards not learning Lua but using a template script instead... |

| I hate to say it, but the entire Roblox community should not learn to script. I don't want to get into the reasoning, as it is kind of long, but it's the same reason the whole world shouldn't learn to program. |

| The entirety of the Roblox community that makes games should learn to script. I think that's a fair thing to ask for. |

| From what I saw, the ROBLOX team is just trying to provide a basic template so people add a few things on the map to create their own level. A lot of users are too young to be able to even comprehend scripting, so they often need a little nudge to get going. Templates are not a replacement of scripting, they are merely a way to get younger kids more involved in creating places and not just playing them. |

| The majority of people that make games that receive decent plays do know how to script (within reason). |

Thank you. I've been trying to find a way to word that, but just couldn't do it. |

| I think Roblox should move (back) to editable stuff to make games. I don't mean with the configure tool or anything, I mean with studio, in game. I think that made people able to easily express their creativity quickly. Once Roblox started moving away from the easy-to-access studio, things started changing. It'd be a good idea to add insert and studio buttons back into the game like they were years ago. The only issue with this is security, which could easily be fixed, I'm sure. If the game is not in a definite offline state, do not allow studio or the insert bar/window/thing to be opened at all. This should allow users to express their creativity better and make funner games. It may even lead people to editing some free-model scripts, which may take them further. |

I get that they want building to appeal more to the kids, but let's face it. We end up with:
- Horrible places - Inappropriate models - Spam - Other inappropriate things
I think they should leave the game design to the older kids :/ |

| We're only good at designing games because we've practiced it... since we were their age. Roblox may be starting them on a path towards desgning games. Had I not of found Roblox, I'd of been a completely different person, probably not one good at game design. |

| Again, considerably less people are electing to learn Lua (you guys didn't even read my whole post T_T) in this era of the company so in the near future, there won't be people to make new, quality content. |

"so in the near future, there won't be people to make new, quality content."
John's master plan is to to attract semi-professional developers to ROBLOX by paying them back real-life money based on place visits. He will sell "developer" Builders Club for people who want to do this, it'll be a hefty sum but some people will be able to pull a profit. |

When I joined Roblox, I was 10. Although being a relatively intelligent child, Roblox was a wonderful mystery to me. I didn't know how to do anything _really_ cool, but inserting free models and battling zombies with my friends was great fun.
With the new templates, users will be able to do this more easily. The average user will be able to more easily make a fun place to play with their friends. Not everything is about getting to the front page and becoming rich, some people DO (believe it or not) just like to build and play.

I joined in 2009, when I was 9. I only played obbies and tycoons. Then in 2012 when I was 12, I started scripting. That's it. :P

| Yes it's easier, blah. I'm looking long term though. People will slowly believe that you don't need scripting at all. This will severely hurt the quality of games in the long run. Right now we'll have some good quality CTF's. Lots of them. And nothing else but picture/title changer idiots like "rebreb9797"... |
