Right, those in glass houses and all, but this piece of software seriously drives me crazy.
Any suggestions for an alternative free 3D modelling and animation studio? |

You mean like all of those alternatives that Gimp has? |

I looked at student versions for both Maya and 3ds Max (both autodesk products). Looks like anyone can download and use - there is no proof of being a student required, however, they watermark everything generated with the student edition.
The real problem though is if I use and decide that I want to buy either of them the cost of the commercial product is $4k. |

@Julien I prefer Apple SketchUp... you know, because Apple is better at everything. |

| LDD is by far the best 3D modeling software. |

| Used sketchup about 4 years ago. From what I remember, it was decent, but a lot more CAD oriented. Perhaps it's changed or evolved since then? The solution I'm searching for is software suited to character and environment modelling. |

| It seems to me as if the OP is trying to get something for nothing. Who is going to devote a large portion of their life to writing a 3D rendering & animation program and then only get paid by donations? Seriously. :O |

I would expect plenty of people. Have you ever used a *nix OS? Do you ever read wikipedia? Used jquery? Git?
Have you ever heard of any of these guys: Donald Knuth, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds |

| Yeah but I mean can you find any high-quality free 3D rendering or animations programs out there? I realize that there are some people who do write free software/hardware/OS/libraries but I'm talking specifically about this niche. |

| Are you looking for a tool just for yourself, or also potentially for work? Like does it matter if it's an "industry standard"? |
