@Blue A voxel was put in roblox as an alternative for builders and for PBS's. You can use more of them in a single place then you can with regular bricks. Unfortunately they all have horrid quality.

| @Scar they aren't in Studio yet. But, your Voxels are the terrain and the High Scalability parts on PBS servers. |

The terrain uses voxels to give it huge optimisation possibilities, like super compressed data storage and suchlike. In it's simplest form, a voxel can be thought of as a 3D pixel: It only has enough data stored to draw itself and nothing else.
Commonly a voxel grid might be represented in memory as something like this (Except this is in a 2D perspective)
1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 1-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-1-1-1 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3
Pretend that was in 3D, with a few layers, and that '1' meant air, '2' meant dirt and '3' meant stone
Then you could represent a row of this type of terrain in a single integer. It can be optimised even further but most likely it just uses a byte or char to represent each square. |

| Aside from the quality of Voxels, Roblox uses RLE (Runtime Length Encoding) do load, and _maybe_ render faster. |

Okay, so you are the "3". You're looking at the "1"s to the left of you, but you can't see the "2"s because their being covered up by more "1"s that we can't see because we need to see the "2"s in this demonstration. The "0"s represent air. Since the "2"s are impossible to see in the current state of the world from your perspective, the engine doesn't bother to render them, saving the time it would take to calculate the placement of polygons on your screen. |

A voxel is a volumetric pixel, that is, a 3D pixel. ROBLOX uses them for terrain.
I won't bother explaining more, since you can find all the information you need on Wikipedia and in the blog. |
